Key Points

  • Citigroup has set a 12-month price target for Bitcoin of just $113,000.

  • According to JPMorgan Chase, Bitcoin will grow at an annualized rate of 10% over the next decade.

  • Over the previous decade, Bitcoin's compound annual growth rate was 37%.

  • Motley Fool Issues Rare "Total Conviction" Buy Alert ›

Given that Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) is still down 7% for the year, it's perhaps no surprise that crypto analysts continue to ratchet down their price targets for the world's most popular cryptocurrency.

At the beginning of October, for example, Citigroup (NYSE: C) put out a 12-month price target for Bitcoin of just $113,000. That's a nifty 35% gain from today's price of $84,000. But it's still well under Bitcoin's all-time high of $126,000 from October 2025. And it's nowhere near the $200,000 price target being bandied about earlier this year.

So that raises an interesting question: Can Bitcoin really double in value during its next bull market run? The answer might surprise you.

Bitcoin's future rate of growth

At the outset, it's important to point out that Bitcoin's future rate of growth will likely look very different from its historical rate of growth.

For example, JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) recently predicted that Bitcoin will grow at an annualized rate of 10% over the next decade. That's better than the predicted growth rates for stocks, bonds, or gold, but it's not even close to Bitcoin's historical rate of growth.

From August 2017 to August 2026, it grew at a compound annual growth rate of 37%. That helps to explain why Bitcoin has soared in value over the past decade. Quite simply, it has been growing at gravity-defying rates for a long time.

So is it time for Bitcoin to slow down and behave more like a traditional asset? Let's assume that Bitcoin does grow at the 10% annual clip predicted by JPMorgan Asset Management. If it grows at that rate over the next three years (the length of a typical Bitcoin bull market cycle), it would hit a price of just $112,000. It certainly won't double in value, and it won't even set another all-time high.

The big takeaway for Bitcoin investors

The big takeaway for Bitcoin investors is that the future growth rate of Bitcoin is what matters, not its past historical growth rate. Bitcoin may never be able to replicate its past performance. After all, as all investors know, past performance is no guarantee of future performance.

For some investors, that might be perfectly OK. Who can argue with an asset growing at a brisk 10% every year? But if you're hoping to double your money by investing in Bitcoin, be sure to temper your expectations. Bitcoin is still a fantastic long-term investment, but it may no longer be the millionaire maker it once was.
