Which looks like the better buy

Investors seeking exposure to the aerospace and defense industry have two distinct choices in the Global X Defense Tech ETF (SHLD) and iShares U.S. Aerospace & Defense ETF (ITA). The former introduces technology-focused companies into the mix, while the latter offers a more traditional view of the sector. Both have pros and cons, making either an appealing investment, depending on the factors that matter most to you.

I like SHLD because the fund incorporates the future of today's military systems in its holdings, which includes companies that deliver cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, robotics, and drone technologies. For instance, Palantir is the top holding, a signal of the importance of the company's AI capabilities in warfare. Another interesting stock in the ETF is Planet Labs, which provides regular satellite imagery and data about the Earth, an increasingly important insight to military operations. ITA does not include these companies.

That said, ITA is a solid fund delivering lower volatility than SHLD, as demonstrated by its smaller max drawdown. It's also the cheaper ETF and sports a larger AUM for greater liquidity.
