An analyst initiated coverage of Argan (NYSE: AGX) stock early Monday morning. Unfortunately for the company and its investors, her opening evaluation was not positive. Buffeted by that headwind, Argan's stock fell by almost 8% that day.

Starting with a thumbs-down

That prognosticator is Dimple Gosai of Piper Sandler, who believes Argan rates an underweight (i.e., sell) at its current level. She set a price target of $273 per share for the industrial stock, which is 32% below its most recent closing price.

According to reports, Gosai expressed concern that Argan is reaching the limits of its capacity. She cited the company's recent disclosure that it has a "ceiling" on the number of available work crews for projects. Argan has become a popular stock, driven mainly by the company's involvement in the intense build-out of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities in data centers for tech companies.

Yet that's another weakness for Argan, in Gosai's view. She added that the current project award cycle seems to have peaked.

Not a simple problem to solve

The analyst's points do raise some worries about Argan. While companies large and small are determined to increase AI compute as much as their budgets allow, the labor issue could become problematic. Argan continues to have great potential as a go-to builder in this current wave, but investors should watch how it approaches its capacity problem.
