When gold prices surged to record highs in 2026, Harmony Gold Mining (NYSE:HMY) found itself at a critical junction. The company operates a sprawling network of deep-level underground mines across South Africa and open-pit assets in Papua New Guinea and Australia, digging for gold, uranium, and copper. At a recent price of $15.83 per share, the stock has fallen about 3% over the past year amid recent downward pressure from falling gold prices.
Our proprietary Hidden Gems scoring system assigns Harmony Gold Mining an overall Superscore of 77 out of 100, placing it in the Strong category. The Superscore is an AI-powered score that evaluates a company's overall strength by combining financial performance, product market position, technological capabilities, leadership quality, and relative valuation. It represents the unification of all our scores into a single score for public companies, with five rating bands: Exceptional (90-100), Strong (75-89), Above Average (60-74), Average (40-59), and Cautious (0-39). A 77 places Harmony Gold Mining in the Top ~18% of every company we score. This analysis pairs the reasons for this score with the risks involved so you can weigh the evidence yourself.
The company maintains a top-tier return on net tangible assets, which measures how much profit it generates for every dollar tied up in physical equipment and mines. A highly capital-efficient business earns outsized returns on a relatively small base of tangible assets, which can justify why investors might pay a premium for consistent earnings quality even when mining involves high capital intensity.

The Superscore provides a data-driven signal to start your research, but it is not a replacement for your own due diligence regarding Harmony's operational risks, geopolitical exposure, and long-term financial goals.
Despite recent pressure hitting its stock price, which is to be expected amid falling gold prices, Harmony has been delivering on performance. Fiscal 2026 was a record on nearly every line: Revenue climbed 34% to R99.2 billion, net profit more than doubled, and adjusted free cash flow hit roughly $1 billion. The board responded by raising the final dividend from 155 to 750 South African cents, a nearly fivefold increase.
Much of that cash is being redeployed into copper. The CSA mine in Australia delivered 18,207 tonnes in its first year under Harmony's ownership, at the upper end of guidance, and Eva Copper is under construction following the late-2025 investment decision. Copper reserves jumped 71% to 4 million tonnes, and management has laid out a pathway to roughly 100,000 tonnes of annual copper production. For a company that has hit its gold guidance 11 years running, that execution track record counts for something.
Still, the pressure is real. All-in sustaining costs near $2,200 per ounce leave thin cover if gold retreats, deep-level South African mining carries safety and seismic risks that never fully resolve, and the next two years are capital-heavy. But a disciplined operator converting peak gold prices into a durable copper business is the kind of transition that rewards patience, and Harmony could certainly outperform over the next five years if the copper buildout stays on schedule.
