Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong still expects Bitcoin to reach $400,000 by 2030.
His forecast relies on Bitcoin’s four-year halving cycle repeating itself.
Armstrong’s advice to hold through cycles and start small is more useful than his specific price target.
Ask a crypto exchange CEO where Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) is headed, and the answer probably won't be "down." Still, Brian Armstrong's answer on the Sept. 18 episode of the Money Rehab podcast, recorded the same day a major crypto bill stalled in the Senate, came with a heavy dose of fine print.
Host Nicole Lapin asked the Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN) chief whether he still expected Bitcoin to reach $400,000 by 2030.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
"I think I have said that publicly before," Armstrong replied, and I remember those statements. "Yes, I would stand by that."
Then came the levelheaded warning label. "Past performance does not predict the future, or any of that. So these are all speculations, right?" he said. "Anybody who tells you they can perfectly predict these things, you shouldn't listen to."
I wholeheartedly agree. On that note, Armstrong's direction looks sound. His timeline is another matter.

Bitcoin's code cuts the supply of new coins in half roughly every four years. Armstrong pointed out that prices have tended to rally around those events and then cool off for about a year. He thinks the current cyclical cool-off is already over. Lapin noted that Bitcoin sat near $63,000 this summer. It was trading around $76,400 on the day of the interview, and Armstrong guessed it could reach about $90,000 by year-end. So far, so good: Bitcoin is up 8.6% since then, to about $82,900 on Oct. 9.
If the pattern holds, "I could see a path to get to 3x its prior all-time high by 2030," he said (lightly edited for clarity). Bitcoin's record is $126,198, set in October 2025. Triple that, and the result lands in the neighborhood of $400,000.
Each Bitcoin cycle has ended at a higher peak, but the climbs keep getting shorter. The 2017 peak was about 17 times the 2013 high. The 2021 peak was about 3.4 times the 2017 high. The 2025 peak was about 1.8 times the 2021 high. That's a staircase with shrinking steps, despite helpful events like the introduction of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds and the launch of a federal Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. Yet, Armstrong's target needs the next step to be taller again.
Getting from today's price of about $82,900 to $400,000 by late 2030 would require compounding at roughly 48.2% per year for four straight years. Lapin did the napkin math on air and landed near 50%. Bitcoin would also need a market cap of about $8.2 trillion, or roughly five times today's $1.66 trillion. That's a lot of new money entering the crypto market in a short time.
It's also worth noting that Armstrong runs the largest U.S. crypto exchange. Coinbase's revenue rises with crypto prices and trading activity, so a bullish Coinbase CEO is hardly a surprise.
Armstrong deserves credit for admitting that "the shorter term is much harder to predict." His long-term logic of fixed supply plus rising adoption holds up, and Bitcoin may well be worth more in 2030 than it is today. It might not be worth 4.8 times as much, though.
His most useful advice on that podcast wasn't a lofty price target anyway.
That's sensible guidance whether Bitcoin hits $400,000 on schedule or takes its sweet time getting there.
