With a more cautious consumer and higher fuel costs internally affecting its business, Walmart (NASDAQ: WMT) stock has struggled to find its footing in 2026. As of this writing, shares are down 4.4% on the year, compared to the 12.1% return of the S&P 500 over the same period.

That said, compared to where the stock price may be trading by this time next year, now could be a favorable time to start or add to a position.

What weighs on the Walmart stock price

In its fiscal second-quarter 2027 earnings report, Walmart beat earnings-per-share and revenue estimates, according to CNBC-tracked forecasts. It also boosted net sales expectations for the year, raising the range to 4% to 5% from 3.5% to 4.5%. Still, that wasn't enough to win over the markets.

Investors seem concerned about a few factors that were mentioned earlier, including Walmart's expectation to incur $2 billion due to higher fuel prices, and worries about consumers' wallets tightening. There's also Walmart's valuation to consider. Its forward price-to-earnings ratio of 38 leaves the retailer seeming pricey among more conservative investors, giving it high expectations to reach during its earnings reports.

The day before Walmart's Q2 earnings report, on Aug. 19, shares closed at $114.03. Since then, however, the stock price has not climbed back to that $114 price level.

Investing $3,000 in Walmart today

As of the Sept. 29 opening price of $107.47, a $3,000 investment in Walmart stock through fractional investing would yield more than 27 shares. Over the next 12 months, the median one-year price target from the 47 analysts covering the stock is $130, according to CNN. If Walmart stock were to reach that price, a $3,000 investment would be worth approximately $3,628.

To further develop potential scenarios, the group's highest price target of $155 would turn a $3,000 investment into roughly $4,326. Even the lowest price target of $110 would still turn that $3,000 investment into $3,070.

While these aren't guarantees for where the stock could trade, analyst price targets do help establish sentiment around a stock. These targets also help establish a risk-to-reward framework that can aid in making an investing decision.

What to consider before investing in Walmart

Walmart offers a mix of reliability as a Dividend King, having boosted its dividend for more than 50 consecutive years, and revenue growth engines. Through its membership platform, budding advertising division, and artificial intelligence shopping agent, Sparky, its continuous efforts to improve the retail shopping experience give it favorable long-term prospects.

That doesn't mean its challenges with higher fuel costs or a cautious consumer will go away anytime soon. However, Walmart is still well-positioned to handle tough stretches, as evidenced by its 53 consecutive years of dividend increases. Based on the stock price projections mentioned earlier, with even the lowest target still showing gains, this could be a favorable time to consider adding shares to where the stock price could be trading over the next year. In the long term, those gains could be even more impressive.

While past performance doesn't guarantee future results, Walmart has demonstrated the ability to outperform broader markets, with its share price climbing 133% over the last five years. In comparison, the S&P 500 is up 76.2% over the same period. If it can get out of this lull, with the revenue-growth engines at its disposal, it could deliver another five years of outperformance.

Nvidia's $150 billion buyback landed — and the AI sector fell anyway. That's the signal worth tradingNvidia closed up 1.68% at $228.86 on 28 September after announcing a $150 billion share repurchase authorisation, the largest single corporate buyback on record, while the rest of the AI complex sold off: AMD -3.6%, Micron -2.6%, Meta -4.8% and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index -1.61%. The divergence is not noise. Capital is rotating toward cash-flow certainty, not abandoning the AI theme. With Micron reporting after the close on 30 September, here is what the split means.
