One of the best-performing financial sector stocks on Tuesday was a name unknown to many investors. Boutique advisory company Perella Weinberg Partners (NASDAQ: PWP) is apparently the subject of a merger with or acquisition by a larger peer, and investors reacted by snapping up its shares. At market close, they were up by nearly 12%.

That morning, The Wall Street Journal published a story reporting that Perella Weinberg has been in discussions with Piper Sandler (NYSE: PIPR) about combining their businesses.

Citing unnamed "people familiar with the matter," the Journal wrote that a deal could be concluded soon. Those sources cautioned that nothing is certain and that the talks between the two sides won't necessarily result in an agreement.

The pair share numerous similarities. Both have long histories providing financial advisory services, either because of their founders or their corporate legacy. Both have also supplied advice for parties in high-profile, high-stakes deals.

Mum's the word, for now

Neither Perella Weinberg nor Piper Sandler has yet officially commented on the Journal's story, although that's quite typical in situations like this. The two wanting to tie up is entirely believable, given the compatibility of their operations.

I'd imagine a deal will indeed be announced shortly, although much of its upside is likely already priced into Perella Weinberg's Tuesday stock pop.
