Is XRP Decentralized? One Crypto Founder Calls the Claim Fraud

Justin Bons, founder of Cyber Capital, calls selling XRP to retail investors decentralized outright fraud. His criticism arrives as Evernorth prepares its Nasdaq debut.

The clash pits Bons against David Schwartz, and it tests how decentralized the XRP Ledger really is.

What Makes a Blockchain Truly Decentralized?

Decentralization means no single party controls participation, governance, or transaction rules. The XRP debate centers on whether validator lists give a small group real control.

Bons criticized the decision, arguing that undisclosed software changes create unnecessary security concerns for network participants and investors. The amendment could activate on October 9 if validators give enough support under the network’s voting requirements.

The core criticism targets consensus. Justin Bons says XRP operates as Proof of Authority. In that model, power rests in permissioned validator lists published by Ripple and the XRP Ledger Foundation. He calls the people who control those lists kingmakers.

“That is the consequence of putting our faith in a centralized system. Eventually, that power will be abused, with dire consequences. As power corrupts & absolute power corrupts absolutely,” Bons noted.

David Schwartz, Ripple’s CTO Emeritus and an original architect of the ledger, rejects that view. He has previously said that anyone can run a node or validator. The Unique Node List, he argued, grants no real governance control.

Honest nodes enforce the rules, Schwartz says, and software choice settles disputes, as on other networks. He has argued that the ledger resists censorship more effectively than Bitcoin or Ethereum in practice.

Why Does the Evernorth Debut Matter Now?

The timing has drawn attention. Evernorth, the XRP treasury company backed by Ripple, expects to close its merger with Armada Acquisition Corp. II. Its Nasdaq debut under XRPN is scheduled for Monday, October 12.

If the listing proceeds, Evernorth would become the largest public pure-play XRP vehicle. It holds about 473 million tokens, with backing from Ripple, Pantera, Kraken, and other investors.

Critics say the launch reinforces concerns about centralization and transparency. Supporters counter that the ledger remains public and the vehicle offers only regulated exposure to XRP.

Evernorth’s launch also tests whether investors separate the ledger from the company holding the tokens. That distinction will shape how the market reads the debut.

On Monday, the debate over whether XRP is truly decentralized will return to the center of the market conversation. Traders will watch the first session for signs of demand.
