October tends to be a busy month for older Americans. It's when Medicare's annual fall open enrollment period begins, and it's also when the Social Security Administration (SSA) tends to provide key updates on the program.

This year, the SSA is expected to share big news on Oct. 14. Here's what to expect.

An official COLA should be revealed

For months, there's been speculation about Social Security's upcoming cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). Current estimates put that raise in the range of 3.5% to 3.6%. And most retirees would probably prefer to see the higher number come through -- or perhaps an even bigger increase than 3.6%.

The reality is that Social Security COLAs are aligned with inflation. Larger COLAs mean prices have been rising at a faster pace, while smaller COLAs mean price increases haven't been as severe. A larger COLA isn't necessarily good, and a smaller one isn't automatically bad.

Ultimately, COLAs aren't even guaranteed to keep pace with inflation because they're backward-facing. The COLA announced later this month, for example, will apply to benefits starting in January 2027. But it'll be based on inflation changes during the third quarter of 2026.

Even if the COLA is generous, if inflation picks up in the new year, Social Security recipients could lose out on buying power. That's actually what happened this year. Inflation outpaced the 2.8% COLA that arrived in January, due in part to price increases resulting from the Middle East conflict.

Other changes to look out for

In addition to making the 2027 COLA official, the SSA should share the following information on Oct. 14:

  • The new earnings-test limits, which apply to Social Security recipients who work before reaching their full retirement age.
  • The program's maximum monthly benefit, which typically only applies to high earners.
  • The 2027 wage cap, which determines how much income is taxed to fund Social Security.
  • The value of a work credit in 2027, which helps labor force participants qualify for Social Security benefits in retirement.

Of course, those on Social Security probably care more about the upcoming COLA than anything else. And that's understandable, since it directly affects their income. But the other changes noted here shouldn't be glossed over, and they're all important in their own right.

Furthermore, the latter two changes apply to workers more than retirees. So while the big Oct. 14 Social Security announcement might focus on the upcoming COLA, it's not only older Americans who need to tune in.
