On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 30, 2026, W&T Offshore (NYSE:WTI) reported production of 38,200 barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day, exceeding the high end of its guidance by 4% without drilling new wells. The company continues to extract cash from mature Gulf of Mexico assets by funding cheap well repairs instead of expensive offshore drilling. That disciplined approach keeps debt low and builds cash for future property purchases. Three things management said stand out.

1. Low-Risk Workovers Replace Expensive Offshore Drilling

W&T avoids the massive capital expenditures that sink traditional offshore drillers. Instead, the company spent just over $3 million on seven workover projects and one recompletion, yielding an additional 2,000 BOE per day.

We choose to spend more dollars on low-risk, high-rate-of-return workovers and facility work rather than drilling new wells.
-- Tracy Krohn, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

2. Cash Reserves Are Earmarked for Acquisitions Over Drilling

Cash on hand reached over $190 million while net debt fell 20% to $160 million, dropping leverage below 0.9 times trailing adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA). Rather than funding speculative development wells, management plans to deploy that cash into acquiring producing Gulf properties.

We don't have any drilling planned for 2027 at this point. I'd rather save our dollars for potential acquisitions.
-- Tracy Krohn, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

3. Cost Controls Keep Base Operating Expenses Down

Lease operating expenses (LOE), the ongoing costs to maintain producing wells and offshore platforms, came in at $77 million for the third quarter. Prior structural cost cuts helped buffer operating margins against commodity price swings.

We made strides to lower our base LOE spend through cost-saving initiatives in late 2025 that we have seen materialize in 2026.
-- Tracy Krohn, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Favorable Gulf energy prices give W&T room to accelerate maintenance into late 2026. That sets up higher production heading into early 2027.

We have a solid cash position and strong liquidity that enables us to maintain our focus on evaluating accretive opportunities while continuing to generate strong free cash flow and EBITDA.
-- Tracy Krohn, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

On the portfolio side, management is evaluating shallow-water asset sales while maintaining low leverage and strict capital discipline across its legacy footprint.

With consistent production, increased realized pricing and ongoing cost control, we believe we are well positioned operationally and financially to deliver robust results in 2027 and beyond.
-- Tracy Krohn, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
