Investors might do well to pay more attention to Eaton (NYSE: ETN). The power equipment maker, based in Ireland, generated a record $8.5 billion in sales in the second quarter, an increase of 21% year over year. Organic sales, which exclude acquisitions and currency fluctuations, grew 14%, while free cash flow jumped 22% to $874 million.

The company's electrical equipment businesses are benefiting from surging demand for data centers, grid modernization, and power infrastructure. Unlike some companies riding the artificial intelligence boom, Eaton already has a profitable business with substantial orders and a growing backlog.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »

With shares closing at $381.98 on Oct. 20, a $500 investment is enough to purchase one share and still have money left over. Here's why Eaton is my pick for investors looking to put $500 into an industrial stock today.

Data centers are creating enormous demand

Eaton manufactures equipment that distributes, controls, and protects electrical power. Its products include circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, and power management systems used by utilities, factories, commercial buildings, and data centers. As you can imagine, artificial intelligence is creating particularly strong demand for these products.

Data centers require enormous amounts of electricity, but securing that electricity involves more than connecting servers to the grid. Operators need equipment that safely distributes power, prevents outages, and manages electrical loads. Eaton supplies much of that infrastructure.

In Q2, sales in its Electrical Americas division reached a record $4 billion, representing 18% organic growth. Operating profit reached $1.1 billion, with an operating margin of 27.5%, and the division's rolling 12-month average orders increased 41% organically. That 41% order growth is well above the division's 18% quarterly sales growth, suggesting strong demand for Eaton's electrical equipment.

Eaton's Electrical Global business is also expanding rapidly. Q2 sales increased 44% to $2.5 billion, including 18% organic growth. Its backlog more than doubled from a year earlier. These numbers suggest Eaton's growth isn't simply the result of investors getting excited about AI. Customers are placing actual orders for the equipment needed to build and expand electrical infrastructure.

Growth extends beyond artificial intelligence

Eaton's aerospace business provides another source of revenue and profits. The division manufactures hydraulic, fuel, motion-control, and other systems used in commercial and military aircraft.

Q2 aerospace sales increased 13% to a record $1.2 billion. Operating profit climbed 16% to $278 million, while the segment's backlog increased 28% year over year. That gives Eaton exposure to commercial aircraft production and defense spending without depending entirely on electricity demand. Management is also reshaping the company's portfolio.

In June, Eaton announced plans to separate its Mobility business through a transaction expected to close in the first quarter of 2027. The move would concentrate its operations further on electrical equipment and aerospace, where growth rates and profit margins are generally stronger.

The company is also expanding its data center capabilities through acquisitions, including Boyd Thermal, which adds liquid-cooling technology. As AI servers become more powerful, traditional air cooling becomes increasingly difficult. Liquid cooling offers a way to remove heat from high-density computing systems, providing Eaton with another potential growth opportunity.

The financial outlook remains strong

Following its Q2 results, Eaton raised its 2026 organic sales growth guidance to between 11% and 13%. Management also expects adjusted earnings per share of $13.40 to $13.60, representing approximately 12% growth at the midpoint compared with 2025.

Using the Oct. 20 closing price of $381.98 and the midpoint of that guidance, Eaton trades at 28.3 times expected 2026 adjusted earnings. That's not cheap for an industrial company.

However, Eaton's combination of double-digit organic growth, expanding electrical equipment demand, and strong operating margins helps explain why investors are willing to pay a premium. The company also generated $1.1 billion in operating cash flow during Q2, giving it financial resources to invest in manufacturing capacity, acquisitions, and shareholder returns.

Is Eaton worth buying with $500?

At $381.98 per share, $500 would buy one full Eaton share, leaving approximately $118 available for another investment. If your brokerage supports fractional shares, you could put the entire amount into Eaton. The stock has also pulled back roughly 20% from its August 2026 high of $478, offering a more attractive entry point than you would have had just a couple of months ago.

To clarify, Eaton isn't a bargain-basement stock, and its valuation leaves limited room for disappointing results. But the company has a growing electrical equipment backlog, profitable aerospace operations, and a business positioned to benefit from years of investment in power infrastructure. If you're a long-term investor with $500 to put to work, Eaton offers a compelling combination of established profitability and above-average industrial growth.
