Growth stocks are shares in companies with the potential to increase their revenue and profits significantly faster than average by focusing on disruptive new opportunities that can transform the way people live and do business. Betting on these equities can help investors turn a relatively small amount of money into significantly more over the long term.

Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) is a quintessential growth stock that aims to help pioneer the market for electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOLs), a special type of electric helicopter that could eventually replace traditional ground-based taxis on high-value routes. Let's explore the pros and cons of the company to decide what a $500 position made today might be worth in the next five years.

A potentially transformational market

Analysts at JP Morgan are incredibly optimistic about the future for eVTOLs, projecting that the market could be worth an eye-popping $1 trillion by 2040. And unlike other tech megatrends like quantum computing or generative AI, it's pretty easy for regular people to understand how value can be created by this technology.

We have all had to make the miserable journey from an airport to a city center. In areas without reliable mass transit, this can mean having to rent a car or taxi at significant expense and potentially burning hours in heavy traffic. EVTOLs offer an alternative by avoiding road congestion to quickly and safely transport passengers directly to their locations by air.

Unlike traditional helicopters, EVTOLs replace heavy and loud gasoline motors with silent battery packs and multiple independent rotors to add redundancy, making them ideal to operate in dense locations.

What is Archer Aviation's edge?

Battery-powered flight technology is coming into the mainstream -- especially in military applications like drones and unmanned aircraft systems (UASs). So it is probably just a matter of time before EVTOLs are ready for widespread commercial application. In response, dozens of companies across the U.S., E.U., and China are racing to establish an early-mover advantage while the opportunity is still nascent.

Archer Aviation stands out because of its unique business model. Instead of just manufacturing eVTOLs, it also wants to operate its own passenger air taxi service. This can allow the company to tailor its aircraft designs for its own needs, reduce costs through vertical integration, and enjoy potentially higher-margin service revenue. That said, there is still a long way to go before this ambitious operational strategy fully plays out.

As of the second quarter, Archer Aviation's revenue remains minuscule at just $5 million as the company hasn't yet started EVTOL-related commercial operations. Meanwhile, operating losses rose 59% year over year to an eye-watering $279.2 million mainly because of the huge research and development expense related to improving and testing its flagship Midnight EVTOL design.

What will the next five years have in store?

The next five years will be very interesting for Archer Aviation and its shareholders. But the make-or-break moment may come in just under two years when the Olympic Games are scheduled to be held in Los Angeles, California. Archer Aviation has been selected as the official air taxi provider for the games. This will be crucial proof of concept as it transports VIPs and fans while also providing emergency services.

If things go according to plan, the company seems to have strong multibagger potential over the next half-decade. Its market cap of just $4.4 billion is relatively small compared to the potential of the eVTOL opportunity. And an investment made today could easily grow at 20% annually (double the S&P 500's average annual return of 10%) -- turning $500 into $1,244.16 by 2031.

However, that is a best-case scenario. And investors who buy the stock now face the prospects of huge losses and potential delays as the company attempts to achieve commercial operation. It might make more sense to wait for more information before considering a position.
