Investors face a choice between the high-efficiency digital platform of Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:BKNG) and the ongoing retail transformation of GameStop Corp. (NYSE:GME) as travel and gaming markets evolve in 2026.

Booking serves as a global leader in online travel services, while GameStop remains a primary destination for physical gaming media. This comparison explores which business model provides the better balance of growth, stability, and valuation for everyday retail investors looking to diversify their consumer-focused holdings today.

The case for Booking Holdings

Booking operates a massive digital ecosystem that connects travelers with hotels, flights, and car rentals through brands like Booking.com and Priceline. The company focuses on its Connected Trip strategy, which aims to integrate every aspect of travel into a single, seamless user experience. By operating in the travel and tourism stocks space, it reaches customers in more than 220 countries and relies on a global network of hotel and airline partners.

In its latest annual report, filed for FY 2025, revenue reached about $26.9 billion, representing a growth rate of roughly 13.4% compared to the prior year. The company reported a net income of approximately $5.4 billion during this period, despite a slight decrease in its net margin to around 20%. This profitability remains robust as the company manages its vast network of third-party traffic providers, including major search engines and mobile app marketplaces.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the current ratio stands at approximately 1.3x, which measures its ability to cover short-term obligations with assets it can quickly turn into cash. Booking reported a debt-to-equity ratio of about negative 3.5x, indicating that total liabilities exceed shareholder equity. Free cash flow was approximately $9.1 billion, representing the cash remaining after the company pays for its operations and investments in physical equipment.

The case for GameStop

GameStop serves a dedicated base of gaming and pop culture enthusiasts through a network of roughly 1,600 retail locations and an expanding e-commerce presence. The company depends on major manufacturers like Nintendo (OTC:NTDOF), Sony Group Corp. (NYSE:SONY), and Pokémon to provide the hardware and software that drive its retail sales. Recently, management has shifted focus toward aggressive capital allocation and exploring strategic partnerships to better utilize its significant cash reserves.

In its latest annual report, filed for FY 2025, revenue reached about $3.6 billion, representing a decline of roughly 5.1% from the previous year. Despite the lower revenue, the company achieved a net income of approximately $418.4 million, which resulted in a net margin of just about 11.5%. This improvement in profitability over previous years suggests that efforts to streamline operations and manage costs are beginning to impact the bottom line.

As of its January 2026 balance sheet, the current ratio was around 15.3x, indicating a very high level of liquidity relative to short-term liabilities. The debt-to-equity ratio was roughly 0.8x, which measures total debt, including short-term and long-term obligations, relative to shareholder equity. Free cash flow for FY 2025 was approximately $597.3 million, providing the company with additional flexibility to fund its ongoing business transition and potential future investments.

Risk profile comparison

Booking faces intense competition from direct-booking providers and large technology platforms that are increasingly using artificial intelligence to disintermediate travel services. The company is under significant regulatory pressure in Europe, having been designated a gatekeeper under the Digital Markets Act, which could limit its operational flexibility. Key competitors like Airbnb Inc. (NASDAQ:ABNB) and various global search engines continue to challenge its market share, while potential tax changes in the Netherlands add financial uncertainty.

GameStop continues to struggle with the broader industry shift toward digital-first gaming services, which reduces the overall demand for physical retail media. The company is also exposed to high stock price volatility and risks related to its concentrated logistics operations in Texas. Furthermore, GameStop must compete with mass-market retailers such as Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT), Target Corp. (NYSE:TGT), and Best Buy Co. Inc. (NYSE:BBY), all of which have significant resources to capture gaming market share.

Valuation comparison

GameStop offers a lower entry point on both earnings and sales multiples, while Booking carries a higher premium reflecting its significantly larger scale.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

Booking Holdings is successfully shifting from an agency model to a primarily merchant model. That means it used to make its money as an agent—connecting travelers to a hotel and collecting a commission while the hotel manages collecting payment from the traveler. In the merchant model, Booking "buys" capacity from hotels and other providers on its platform and collects payment directly from the traveler. This tends to lead to fatter margins.

The company is also in excellent financial shape. It has $16 billion in cash, which makes its balance sheet investment grade. A plus for shareholders, the company has a $20 billion share buyback program. The brand is increasingly a destination for travelers, which means it is paying less to companies like Google for search engine visibility. Today, two-thirds of Booking.com's visitors are "organic," meaning they are direct visitorsher than rather than from paid ad traffic.

Revenue will grow about 9% this year to $29.3 billion. But net income takes a healthier 50% leap to about $8.1 billion.

GameStop, meanwhile, has benefitted greatly from its move in recent years to emphasize trading cards and collectibles in addition to its video game business, and it is paying off. It caught many investors' eyes when it made an unsolicited bid to buy eBay Inc. (NASDAQ:EBAY) earlier this year, too. Though that was rejected, reports say the CEO, Ryan Cohen, is still pursuing options around eBay, including striking a partnership with the business. Cohen has shown a lot of faith in his ability to boost GameStop’s business. He’s been a heavy buyer of company shares of late.

In its most recent quarter, net sales were $790.2 million, compared to $972.2 million in the prior year's second quarter. The decrease primarily reflects the prior-year launch of Nintendo Switch 2, planned store closures, and the divestiture of the company's France operations.

There were big positives, though: collectibles net sales were $356.3 million for the second quarter, or 45% of net sales, compared to $227.6 million, or about 23% of net sales, in the prior year's second quarter. Its pivot appears to have momentum.

So which is the better stock to buy? GameStop is tempting, but Booking’s momentum in sales and profits today is hard to turn down. With valuation between the two options not significant, Booking Holdings is the stock to buy.
