Choosing between Advance Auto Parts (NYSE:AAP) and Dick's Sporting Goods (NYSE:DKS) requires balancing a turnaround story in the automotive world against a high-growth expansion in the sporting goods arena.

Advance Auto Parts operates as a critical supplier for professional installers and car owners who prefer DIY repairs. Meanwhile, Dick's Sporting Goods has transformed into an omni-channel powerhouse, recently incorporating footwear-specialized retail into its broad athletic equipment business. Comparing them reveals how different growth trajectories and balance sheet health can influence investment decisions.

The case for Advance Auto Parts

According to its latest annual report, filed in early 2026, Advance Auto Parts provides automotive aftermarket parts as one of the major retail stocks in its category. The company serves professional installers, including garages and auto dealerships, who account for nearly 50% of its sales. It also reaches do-it-yourself (DIY) customers through a network of more than 4,300 stores and an e-commerce platform. Additionally, the business supplies roughly 800 independently owned Carquest locations, further extending its brand presence.

In FY 2025, the company reported revenue of about $8.6 billion, representing a year-over-year decline of approximately 5.4%. Despite the drop in sales, the company generated net income of around $44 million during the period. This performance was an improvement from the prior fiscal year, when the company reported a substantial net loss. The management team has focused on stabilization through a restructuring plan intended to streamline its operations and store footprint.

As of its January 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio, which measures total debt against shareholder equity, is approximately 2.4x. Its current ratio, an indicator of the ability to pay short-term liabilities with short-term assets, sits at nearly 1.7x. Free cash flow, which equals cash from operations minus capital expenditures, was approximately negative $298.0 million for the year. This negative cash generation suggests that the company is currently investing heavily or facing operational hurdles during its transition.

The case for Dick's Sporting Goods

In its latest annual report, filed in early 2026, Dick's Sporting Goods describes its expansion as an omni-channel leader. The company caters to athletes through its core stores and sneaker enthusiasts through its footwear business. With approximately 30 million ScoreCard Rewards members and a youth sports platform called GameChanger, the company maintains high customer engagement. Note that the company relies heavily on Nike Inc. (NYSE:NKE) for inventory, as that vendor accounts for roughly 31% of total merchandise purchases. This vendor concentration adds a layer of risk to the business since a change in the partnership could significantly impact inventory.

In FY 2025, revenue reached about $17.2 billion, a significant increase of approximately 28% compared to the previous year. This growth helped drive net income to around $849 million. While this was a strong result, the net margin of nearly 5% was lower than the levels seen in previous fiscal years. The revenue surge was largely influenced by the integration of its footwear business expansion and strong demand across athletic categories.

As of its January 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is approximately 1.4x, reflecting a more conservative leverage position than its peer. Its current ratio is nearly 1.5x, suggesting a healthy balance between short-term assets and liabilities. Free cash flow for the period was approximately $400 million, providing the company with capital to reinvest in store growth or return to shareholders. This cash generation capacity remains a key pillar of the company's financial strategy.

Risk profile comparison

Advance Auto Parts faces intense competitive pressure from other national chains, such as AutoZone Inc. (NYSE:AZO), as well as internet retailers. The company is also managing supply chain risks related to geopolitical instability and reliance on third-party freight carriers. Furthermore, its substantial indebtedness could restrict its operational flexibility if credit markets become volatile. Finally, it is navigating a complex restructuring plan and ongoing securities class action litigation that could result in unanticipated costs or management distraction.

Dick's Sporting Goods faces a securities class action lawsuit alleging it misled investors about the benefits of its footwear business acquisition. The integration of this large business segment carries risks, including the potential failure to achieve expected synergies or manage inventory levels effectively. The company is also highly dependent on its relationship with Nike, making it vulnerable to any shifts in that partner's distribution strategy. Additionally, the business must contend with industrywide risks like inventory shrinkage from organized retail crime and shifting consumer traffic patterns.

Valuation comparison

Dick's Sporting Goods appears cheaper based on the Forward P/E, which compares the stock price to future earnings estimates. Meanwhile, Advance Auto Parts carries a lower P/S ratio, which measures market cap divided by sales over the past twelve months.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

Dick's is winning in the hotly competitive sporting goods sector. The business had about 7% market share before the pandemic and ended its fiscal 2026 with 9% share, according to stock research firm Argus. That's very good growth considering the sporting goods market sees heavyweights Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ:WMT), Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), and others heavily into selling the same category.

The company believes footwear is the growth engine for the whole company, hence their enthusiasm over the Foot Locker acquisition. Foot Locker will help Dick's to strengthen relationships with brands like Nike and hopefully lead to access to higher-profile product launches. Foot Locker also gives Dick's a footprint in cities, where it is difficult to open a big-box store.

Thanks to the Foot Locker buy and improved merchandising, Dick's should add $5 billion in sales this fiscal year, to more than $22 billion, and see net income get over $1 billion.

Advance Auto Parts is in the midst of turning around the struggles it has experienced over the past few years around sales growth, margins, and market share. The aftermarket auto parts business has been in a slump, due largely to a mix of factors: weak do-it-yourselfer demand, vehicle electrification, intense competition, and general pocketbook pressures on consumers.

Company management has been addressing the business' issues by rolling out a new multi-year turnaround program. That started in late 2024, including closing stores, optimizing store footprints, and overhauling its supply chain. To date, the program has produced mixed results. First-quarter fiscal 2026 results that were much better than expected, with revenue of $2.6 billion and net income of $25 million. But the second quarter disappointed the street, and shares plunged as revenue fell short of consensus at $2 billion, even as net income and other metrics beat expectations.

Analysts see full-year 2026 sales slightly lower at $8.57 billion, with net income improving to $167 million, roughly four times 2025 levels.

Which stock is the better buy right now? Dick's gets the nod for its business momentum and its strong presence in the fast-growing youth sports sector.
