As of December 2025, the average Social Security benefit for people aged 70 is $2,274.68 per month, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA). This age marks the absolute ceiling for your monthly check's growth. Credits stop accruing once your 70th birthday arrives, so there isn't any financial reason to wait longer to claim.

Waiting past your full retirement age (FRA) -- 67 for most workers today -- triggers delayed retirement credits. The SSA adds an 8% increase for every full year you delay past that point. If your FRA is 67, this mechanic can add up to 24% to your base amount if you hold off until age 70.

What 70-year-olds collect

The average check for 70-year-olds reflects a wide range of work histories and earlier claiming decisions. While many in this group didn't wait until 70 to claim, those who maxed out delayed retirement credits see significantly higher starting amounts. Many retirees claim earlier to cover immediate costs, which keeps the population average lower than the theoretical maximum.

The gender gap remains visible in this age group. Men receive an average benefit of $2,529.62 per month, while women receive $2,024.08 per month, a gap of about $505.54. This difference often stems from historical wage disparities and differences in years spent in the workforce.

The strategy behind delaying Social Security

Delaying until 70 is often a calculated move for those in good health. It fits people with a history of family longevity or those with a lower-earning spouse. Because the survivor benefit -- the benefit your partner qualifies for after you die -- steps up when the higher-earning spouse waits, this choice can protect a household's income for decades.

You'll generally need to live until age 82 or 83 to reach the break-even point. This is where the larger checks finally catch up to the total amount you'd have received if you'd claimed earlier. If you live an average lifespan, you tend to receive roughly the same total regardless of when you claim.

The SSA bases your benefit on an average of your wages across your 35 highest-earning years. It adjusts earlier wages for inflation and runs them through the primary insurance amount formula.

According to the SSA, men at age 65 are expected to live about 18 more years. Women are expected to live about 21 more years. These averages provide a starting point for your planning, but your personal health history matters more than the agency's broad statistics.

The 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) that will take effect in 2027 will add about $82 a month on top of the age-70 average. Keep in mind that Social Security replaces only about 40% of your pre-retirement income. This share is well short of what most retirees need to cover their costs, so you'll likely need savings or other income sources.

Who shouldn't claim Social Security at 70?

Claiming Social Security at age 70 makes sense if you expect to live into your mid-80s or beyond. If you're in excellent health and have a family history of longevity, this might be worth considering, especially if you qualify for an above-average benefit. If you have a shorter life expectancy, you might prefer to apply earlier.

In addition, some people cannot afford to cover their living expenses on their own until they are 70. These individuals are often better off applying for benefits earlier, too, even if it means settling for a smaller lifetime benefit.

Married individuals may also choose to apply earlier if their spouse isn't eligible for a retirement benefit of their own. They cannot claim a spousal benefit until you are receiving retirement checks. Sometimes, applying earlier can increase the household's benefits compared to the retired worker delaying until 70.

It's worth exploring all your options before deciding which claiming age is right for you. By understanding how your 35-year earnings record and claiming age interact, you can better project how this benefit will fit into your overall retirement floor.
