Key Points

  • The iShares Gold Trust holds physical gold, whereas the VanEck Gold Miners ETF invests in equity positions of global mining companies.

  • VanEck Gold Miners ETF has delivered higher total returns over the last five years but also carries significantly higher volatility and a deeper maximum drawdown.

  • iShares Gold Trust comes with a lower expense ratio than the miner-focused VanEck Gold Miners ETF.

Investors often use gold as a portfolio diversifier or an inflation hedge, but the choice between holding physical bullion and investing in mining companies is a significant structural decision. Two popular gold-related ETFs that provide this exposure are the iShares Gold Trust (NYSEMKT:IAU) and the VanEck Gold Miners ETF (NYSEMKT:GDX).

The iShares Gold Trust tracks the daily performance of gold bullion while the VanEck Gold Miners ETF focuses on the operational results of global firms that extract the metal.

The iShares trust is the more affordable option between the two funds, carrying an expense ratio that is roughly half that of the VanEck fund. This lower cost could make a difference for long-term holders seeking to minimize the drag of management fees on their commodity exposure.

What's inside

iShares Gold Trust provides exposure to the price of gold by holding physical bullion in secure vaults. Because it is a trust holding a commodity rather than an operating business, it does not have a management team seeking to expand production. Its portfolio consists entirely of physical gold at 100%, which places its sector exposure in cash and others. It was launched in 2005.

VanEck Gold Miners ETF tracks the MarketVector Global Gold Miners Index, providing exposure to companies engaged in the worldwide gold mining industry. This approach offers a different risk profile because mining stocks can be influenced by factors like labor costs and management decisions, not just the spot price of gold. Its largest positions include Newmont Corp (NYSE:NEM) at 11.25%, Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd (NYSE:AEM) at 11.15%, and Barrick Mining Corp (NYSE:B) at 7.95%. It holds 57 different securities and was launched in 2006.

Which looks like the better buy

For investors looking for simple long-term exposure to gold, the iShares Gold Trust looks like the better choice.

While downside risk remains in a rising rate environment, gold has pulled back more than 25% from its January highs, potentially offering investors an attractive entry point. What hasn't changed is government deficits continuing to grow, persistent inflation concerns, and a general trend among investors wanting to own hard assets. For those reasons, the long-term case for owning gold remains compelling.

The VanEck Gold Miners ETF certainly has its place. Mining companies can benefit disproportionately from rising gold prices as higher revenue translates into expanding profit margins. However, investing in these businesses introduces additional risks tied to operating costs, management decisions, and production challenges. Even when gold prices rise, there is no guarantee mining stocks will follow.

For long-term investors, the iShares Gold Trust is the one to go with. Its lower expense ratio and direct exposure to physical gold provide a straightforward way to invest in the precious metal without the added complexities of running a mining business.

The VanEck Gold Miners ETF may offer greater upside under the right conditions, but for investors seeking a simple, long-term portfolio diversifier, the iShares Gold Trust is the more compelling investment.

Dollar presses 102 as the 10-year yield sits at 5.14% — and October hike odds are only 17%The dollar index closed at 101.99 (+0.20%) on Monday after briefly topping 102.07, while the 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.14% and the 2-year hit 4.774% — yet futures price only about a 17% chance of a hike at the October 27-28 FOMC, versus roughly 90% for December. The driver is a global bond selloff, not a Fed repricing: France's 10-year OAT jumped to 4.84% ~ 4.94% and the OAT-Bund spread widened to 140 ~ 146bp.
