Both XRP and Solana have displayed the ability to skyrocket in price, based on investor assumptions about their long-term growth potential.
Ripple-backed XRP continues to carve out a role in the future of blockchain-based payments.
Solana could eventually topple Ethereum as the top Layer 1 blockchain network, due to its significantly faster transaction processing speeds.
As crypto investors look beyond Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) and Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) to diversify their portfolios, two of the best options out there are XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) and Solana (CRYPTO: SOL).
Both rank among the top 10 cryptocurrencies in the world in terms of market cap. Both have shown the ability to skyrocket in value, both have spot ETFs to pull in money from retail and institutional investors, and both have demonstrated real-world use cases.
Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »
So which is the better buy right now? Let's take a closer look.
XRP has been an investor darling for years now, thanks to its demonstrated ability to skyrocket in value. At the end of 2024, for example, XRP soared by a head-spinning 580%. Since it started trading in 2013, the XRP token is up a truly astronomical 22,000%.
What has made these enormous gains possible is the important role that XRP plays in the Ripple payment network. The fintech company Ripple has spent billions to create an end-to-end blockchain-based payment network for sending money around the world cheaply and efficiently. XRP plays a major role here. Theoretically, the higher the demand for XRP, the higher its price should go.

At least, that's what some investors think. For example, there has been tremendous buzz about the XRP-centric Ripple payment network potentially replacing the SWIFT payment network for cross-border payments. Given that SWIFT handles trillions of dollars in transaction volume each day, this would obviously be a major win for XRP. It's the reason some bullish crypto investors thought that XRP might explode in price to hit $100.
Here's the thing: Stablecoins continue to eat XRP's lunch. Why use a speculative, highly volatile altcoin like XRP to send money around the world, if you can use a dollar-pegged stablecoin (which always trades for $1)? That's likely why the price of XRP has stagnated of late -- it's impossible to ignore the growing size of the $300 billion stablecoin industry.
Solana is no slouch when it comes to posting impressive price gains, either. In 2023, for example, Solana soared by 924%, ranking it among the top-performing cryptocurrencies in the world. While Solana has since fallen back to earth, it hit an all-time high of $294 in early 2025, amid all the pro-crypto euphoria of the incoming Trump administration.
Solana's primary claim to fame is that it ranks as the preeminent rival to Ethereum for the title of being the top Layer 1 blockchain network in the world. In fact, at one time, Solana was known as a potential "Ethereum-killer."
Solana may still be just one-fifth the size of Ethereum in terms of market cap, but it is currently on pace to wrest more and more market share away from Ethereum in decentralized finance (DeFi). This is the one niche of the crypto world that is key to rapid future growth.
If you're thinking about investing in Solana, keep an eye on the new blockchain upgrade (Alpenglow) coming later this month. It could lead to significantly faster processing times and higher throughput capacity. If this blockchain upgrade results in more users migrating over to Solana, it could be the final nail in Ethereum's coffin.
Moreover, Solana has made inroads in areas such as artificial intelligence. One Layer 1 blockchain will become "the blockchain of AI," and Solana is making important moves here, including the recent launch of a new agentic AI platform.
When it comes to AI, there are a number of potential winners here -- including Ethereum, Bittensor (CRYPTO: TAO), and NEAR Protocol (CRYPTO: NEAR). However, Solana could be the big winner here, based on the suitability of its blockchain for high-frequency machine-to-machine transactions, real-time agent interactions, and high-throughput apps.
If forced to pick between the two, I'm choosing Solana over XRP. Solana is a fully fledged, smart-contract blockchain platform, while XRP is just a distributed blockchain ledger.
As a result, I can see a clear path to Solana flipping XRP in market cap, simply due to the greater number of applications that can run on top of it. The faster that Solana becomes, the stronger this investment thesis becomes.
While investing in Solana is hardly for the faint of heart, it has the type of explosive upside potential that deserves a closer look heading into 2027.
