Because of its unrivaled intellectual property, spanning endless characters, franchises, and storylines, Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS) is a dominant force in the world of entertainment that has a competitive position rivals can't replicate. This standing hasn't always worked out for investors. But the trend has been positive in the past six months.

If you invested $1,000 in this consumer discretionary stock at its 52-week low price of $92.19, which was established in late March, this is how much you'd have today.

Since that low, Disney shares have climbed 14% (as of Sept. 30). That's an encouraging return for a half-year period. A $1,000 sum would be worth $1,140 today.

Despite momentum being on its side, this stock is still trading significantly below its all-time record from March 2021. Shares are 48% off that peak.

Disney makes for an interesting buying opportunity today. The stock is cheap. The market is offering the business to investors at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of just 13.8. It's challenging to find competitively advantaged companies at low valuation multiples like this.

While Disney continues to navigate the secular decline of cable TV, the streaming segment is performing well. Its operating income is surging.

There's always the Experiences division, home to Disney's prized theme parks and cruise lines. An uncertain economic backdrop isn't getting in the way of strong revenue and profit gains here.
