Earlier this week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved AbbVie's (NYSE: ABBV) Juvmo (tavapadon). This is a once-daily pill for adults with Parkinson's disease that gives the pharmaceutical giant a new treatment for an ailment affecting more than 10 million people worldwide.

The approval also puts one of the key assets from AbbVie's $8.7 billion acquisition of Cerevel Therapeutics on the market. AbbVie completed that deal in 2024 in an effort to strengthen its neuroscience pipeline, and Juvmo now has a chance to start generating a return on that investment.

How it works

Juvmo works by selectively activating D1/D5 dopamine receptors in the brain. Dopamine plays an important role in controlling body movement, and Parkinson's progressively destroys the cells that produce it. Now, with Juvmo, AbbVie owns the first FDA-approved Parkinson's treatment to selectively target these particular receptors, giving doctors another option for managing symptoms such as stiffness, tremors, and difficulty moving.

AbbVie is building another major growth business

Neuroscience is already becoming a significant business for AbbVie. Combined sales of Vraylar, Ubrelvy, and Qulipta reached roughly $5.9 billion in 2025, and AbbVie expects its neuroscience portfolio to keep expanding as newer products gain market share. Juvmo could be another contributor to that growth. While near-term revenue from the drug is only expected to reach $8 million this year and $70 million next year, by 2040, Juvmo could deliver $1.4 billion in annual sales.

These aren't trivial numbers as AbbVie continues moving beyond Humira, which once generated more than $20 billion in annual sales before losing U.S. patent exclusivity. To be clear, Juvmo is unlikely to become another Humira on its own, but AbbVie doesn't need it to.

The company is increasingly replacing its dependence on one blockbuster with a collection of growing franchises across neuroscience, immunology, and oncology. Juvmo adds another commercial asset to that strategy while providing some early validation for the $8.7 billion Cerevel acquisition.
