Prediction: A Stock Market Crash Is Coming. Here's the 1 Growth Stock I'd Buy Anyway.

Key Points

  • Markets likely won't be priced at a premium forever.

  • One stock could grow even stronger during a downturn.

  • 10 stocks we like better than Uber Technologies ›

The S&P 500 index currently trades at 26.3 times earnings. That's well above its long-term average of roughly 16 times earnings.

Does that mean a market crash is coming? Not necessarily. Rising corporate profit margins have pushed market price-to-earnings ratios higher over the past two decades. And AI growth could justify the rich valuation.

Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »

But above-average valuations tend to revert at some point. Whenever the next downturn happens, I'll likely be buying more of one particular growth stock.

Uber Technologies can thrive in both bull and bear markets

Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER) currently trades at just 15 times earnings. Its free cash flow yield is roughly 7%.

Why is Uber stock so cheap? Bears worry that the robotaxi industry will hurt Uber's core business. But as hedge fund manager Bill Ackman recently quipped, "When a company becomes a verb, that's a pretty good sign it's in a dominant position." In my view, Uber could actually grow stronger as robotaxis scale up, given its position as the central platform for mobility demand.

During a market correction, expect Uber shares to decline, as they have in previous downturns. But the company's high levels of cash generation should blunt much of the pressure. Economic disruptions, meanwhile, could improve its driver supply even further as dislocated workers seek additional gigs. Struggling competitors such as Lyft (NASDAQ: LYFT) will likely cede even more share to a better-financed Uber during an economic downturn.

Uber stock isn't a perfect safe haven during a bear market. But the company has enough funds to continue investing over a prolonged period of market pain. I expect the company to emerge from any downturn with a stronger competitive position than when it entered.

October hike odds climb toward 60% as Goldman and BofA both flip — what Warsh's "dose of accommodation" really changedRate futures now price roughly 55% to 62% for a 25bp hike at the October 27-28 FOMC, up from about 30% before Chair Warsh's post-meeting framing that the Fed is merely "removing some accommodation." Goldman Sachs has added an October hike to its forecast and Bank of America now sees moves in both October and December. Here is the repricing, the language behind it, and the two data points that decide it.

Nvidia's $150 billion buyback landed — and the AI sector fell anyway. That's the signal worth tradingNvidia closed up 1.68% at $228.86 on 28 September after announcing a $150 billion share repurchase authorisation, the largest single corporate buyback on record, while the rest of the AI complex sold off: AMD -3.6%, Micron -2.6%, Meta -4.8% and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index -1.61%. The divergence is not noise. Capital is rotating toward cash-flow certainty, not abandoning the AI theme. With Micron reporting after the close on 30 September, here is what the split means.
