Down 47% From Its All-Time High, This Is the Most Undervalued Cryptocurrency to Buy Right Now

Key Points

  • Ethereum currently trades 47% below its all-time high from last August.

  • Ethereum remains the market leader in decentralized finance (DeFi), especially in areas such as stablecoins and asset tokenization.

  • Ethereum faces plenty of direct competition from blockchain rivals, which could limit its upside.

Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) is down a stunning 47% from its all-time high of $4,954 reached last August. It currently trades for just $2,600. With the Clarity Act now in limbo after a failed Senate vote in September, Ethereum might trade still lower by the end of the year.

This mix of negative momentum and investor skepticism, though, might have created a unique buying opportunity for crypto investors. In fact, Ethereum might just be the most undervalued cryptocurrency to buy right now. Here's why.

Positives

Ethereum remains the undisputed leader in decentralized finance (DeFi), accounting for a whopping 56% of Total Value Locked (TVL) in the crypto world. No other blockchain even comes close.

Currently, Ethereum is the blockchain of choice for stablecoins and real-world asset (RWA) tokenization, the two fastest-growing areas of DeFi. This makes Ethereum extremely valuable. After all, DeFi is the most important sector of the crypto market, and Ethereum is the clear market leader.

Since its launch in 2015, Ethereum has been an innovation pioneer. Every year, Ethereum releases a strategic roadmap of upcoming blockchain upgrades, which provides important visibility for investors. Right now, investors are eagerly awaiting the Glamsterdam update, which could result in significant changes in speed, efficiency, and throughput capacity.

Negatives

That said, there are plenty of competitors nipping at Ethereum's heels. Its biggest rival right now is Solana (CRYPTO: SOL). But other rivals include Cardano (CRYPTO: ADA), Avalanche (CRYPTO: AVAX), Aptos (CRYPTO: APT), and Sui (CRYPTO: SUI).

It's a long list, and it continues to grow. The latest to launch is Arc, the new Layer-1 blockchain from stablecoin pioneer Circle Internet Group (NYSE: CRCL). If Arc takes off as planned, it could put a serious dent in Ethereum's stablecoin aspirations.

Moreover, Ethereum has had a difficult time translating its DeFi dominance into a commanding lead in "artificial intelligence crypto." Founder Vitalik Buterin has talked up the prospects for AI projects launching on Ethereum, but AI-centric blockchains such as Bittensor (CRYPTO: TAO) have been much more successful in attracting investor attention.

Ethereum's upside potential

There are two ways to think about Ethereum. If you're a "glass-half-empty" type of investor, then Ethereum's time may have come and gone already. After all, it's been a decade since launch, and new rivals continue to appear every year. Maybe it's better to move out of Ethereum and into a more nimble rival?

However, if you're a "glass-half-full" type of investor, Ethereum appears undervalued. Ethereum ETFs continue to attract investor inflows, Ethereum treasury companies continue to buy ETH hand over fist, and Wall Street has made Ethereum its blockchain of choice. This suggests that the upside potential ahead could be immense.

Just look at the future price targets for Ethereum. It's not uncommon to see $10,000 price targets for ETH, suggesting it has the potential to quadruple from its current price. At the very least, Ethereum has an outside chance of reclaiming its all-time high of $5,000 sometime soon. As a result, Ethereum appears to be significantly undervalued at $2,500.
