Prediction: Here's What a $5,000 Investment in AMD Could Be Worth by 2030

Key Points

  • AMD officially became a trillion-dollar company on Sept. 21.

  • The chipmaker has been a huge beneficiary of the AI infrastructure build-out.

  • CEO Lisa Su expects significant revenue and earnings growth in the coming years.

Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) has been one of the market's hottest stocks over the past three years, rising by 539% in that time and surging past the $1 trillion market cap threshold in recent days. Had you invested $5,000 in it three years ago, your position would be worth nearly $32,000 today.

That said, investing is about looking forward. If you're thinking about investing in AMD (or increasing your stake in it), how much might a $5,000 investment made today be worth by 2030? In my view, a value of $7,500 for that position seems well within reach.

Missed AI’s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »

A 50% jump seems reasonable for AMD's stock

At the time of writing, AMD's market cap is about $1 trillion, so it would need to reach at least $1.5 trillion by 2030 for a $5,000 investment to grow into a $7,500 position.

For illustration, if we assume AMD finishes 2026 exactly where it is now, it would need to increase by 50% over the three years from 2027 to 2030. That would require average annualized returns of around 14.5%. For perspective, the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has averaged annualized returns of more than 21% over the past three years.

Again, we can't predict stock price movements, but AMD is well-positioned to average at least mid-teens-percentage returns over the next few years.

AMD's growth trajectory looks strong

AMD has solidified itself as one of the top semiconductor companies in the world, and its momentum isn't likely to fade anytime soon. With the ongoing AI infrastructure build-out not expected to end for years, the conditions supporting AMD's financial growth should continue.

"We are still in the early stages of a multiyear AI adoption cycle as deployments grow across a broad set of markets and workloads, driving demand for more compute and creating a clear path to significant revenue growth and earnings power in the years ahead," said CEO Lisa Su on AMD's second-quarter earnings call.

How much remains to be seen, but I'll use estimates to see how it could reach the needed $1.5 trillion valuation. If we assume AMD is trading at 15 times sales by 2030 (which is expensive, by the way), its revenue would need to be $100 billion to justify a $1.5 trillion valuation.

AMD could easily earn $50 billion this year (it has made $21.8 billion through the first two quarters), so it would need to double that in three years, or average around 26% annual growth. Not a walk in the park, but also not far-fetched if the AI adoption cycle is truly in its early stages. AMD's revenues have increased by at least 31% year over year every quarter since the start of 2025.

Admittedly, rising sales and earnings don't always guarantee stock price gains. However, I think the market will reward consistent growth. Even if a $5,000 investment doesn't grow to $7,500 by 2030, I don't think you'd regret buying AMD now if you're a long-term investor.
