As the global economy evolves, investors are weighing the stability of heavy machinery against the high-growth potential of advanced materials. Is Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) or Corning (NYSE:GLW) the better choice for your portfolio?

Caterpillar is a global leader in construction and mining equipment, while Corning specializes in materials science, particularly glass and optical fiber. While they operate in different sectors, both are essential components of global infrastructure. This comparison evaluates which stock offers the best balance of growth and value in 2026.

The case for Caterpillar

Caterpillar provides essential machinery to the global construction and mining sectors, making it a staple among industrial stocks. The company operates through an extensive independent global dealer network that provides a massive competitive advantage in service and parts. In its latest annual report, filed for FY 2025, the company highlighted recent acquisitions, including Skycatch and Monarch Tractor, to bolster its capabilities in autonomous and electric machinery.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $67.6 billion. This represented growth of roughly 4.3% compared to the previous fiscal year. Net income for the period was approximately $8.9 billion, indicating a healthy net margin of roughly 13.1% even as the company navigated shifting global demand.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is roughly 2.0x. This ratio measures total debt relative to shareholders' equity, indicating how a company finances its assets. The current ratio is approximately 1.4x, and free cash flow reached nearly $7.5 billion. Free cash flow is the cash remaining after the business covers its operating expenses and capital investments.

The case for Corning

Corning is a leader in materials science, producing specialized glass and optical fiber used in everything from smartphones to data centers. The company serves a concentrated customer base, including Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA), to support AI-driven infrastructure. In its latest annual report, filed for FY 2025, the company also noted a multi-billion-dollar partnership with Verizon for high-density optical fiber.

In FY 2025, revenue reached nearly $15.6 billion. This represented growth of roughly 19.1% from the previous fiscal year as demand for AI technology surged. Net income was approximately $1.6 billion, resulting in a net margin of roughly 10.2%, which is a significant improvement over the prior year.

Based on its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is about 0.9x. The current ratio reached approximately 1.6x, indicating a healthy ability to cover immediate liabilities with current assets. Free cash flow was nearly $1.4 billion, the cash remaining after the business covers its core activities and necessary equipment.

Risk profile comparison

Caterpillar faces risks primarily from the cyclical nature of the industries it serves, specifically mining and construction. Fluctuations in commodity prices can lead customers to delay large equipment purchases, impacting revenue. Furthermore, the company must manage competition from large rivals such as Deere & Company (NYSE:DE) and Komatsu(OTC:KMTUF).

Corning carries risks related to its high customer concentration, in which a small number of large tech companies account for a significant share of sales. The company is also exposed to the volatility in demand for manufacturing equipment and to the complexities of the global semiconductor supply chain. Additionally, Corning faces competition in the glass and materials space from companies such as Nippon Electric Glass and Sumitomo(OTC:SSUMF).

Valuation comparison

Caterpillar appears more attractively valued than Corning based on its lower Forward P/E and P/S ratio, which compares price to future earnings estimates and sales.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

Caterpillar and Corning are both iconic industrial stocks with long histories and fantastic long-term performance metrics. And while they ultimately serve different markets, there are many similarities between the two companies. This can make the choice between the two difficult, as both are excellent in their own right. Let's take a closer look at both.

To begin, there's Caterpillar. The company should be familiar to anyone who has seen a construction site. It provides the parts and equipment that enable the construction of infrastructure projects, mining developments, and data centers. The company's core fundamentals remain solid, with steady revenue growth, healthy margins, and plenty of free cash flow. Its dividend yield of 0.8% is modest.

Then, there's Corning. The company's key products include consumer electronics, glass, automotive parts, and, crucially, optical fiber cables. These cables are an important component of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, as they are essential to the operation of AI data centers. Similar to CAT, Corning's key metrics reflect steady income and a healthy balance sheet. However, income-oriented investors may be unimpressed by its dividend yield of only 0.7%.

In summary, both stocks are acceptable choices for investors seeking an industrial stock for their portfolio. However, neither one comes cheap. CAT trades at a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 5.1x, significantly above its five-year average P/S of 2.9x. Corning stock also has a lofty P/S valuation of 7.9x, well-above its five-year average of 3.4x. In other words, these are two premier industrial stocks, and their current prices reflect that. Investors who are more bullish on AI may select Corning, given its greater correlation to the AI sector; investors seeking a slightly more diversified industrial stock may elect CAT.
