If you're a retire on Social Security who's itching to know what the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) is going to look like, you shouldn't have to wait much longer.

Social Security COLAs are based on inflation data from the third quarter of the year. So once data for September comes in, the Social Security Administration (SSA) should be in a position to make that raise official.

In fact, Oct. 14 is when news of a 2027 COLA should come out, which puts the big announcement just weeks away. At that time, the SSA should also reveal other key changes to the program, including a new wage cap and maximum monthly benefit.

You may be hoping that 2027's Social Security COLA is a lot more generous than the 2.8% raise that arrived earlier this year. But while it's natural to wish for a giant COLA, an enormous boost to your Social Security checks is apt to come at a big cost.

The problem with large COLAs

You might assume that seeing your Social Security benefits go up a lot in the new year is a good thing. But one thing you must realize is that those COLAs are tied to inflation readings directly.

What this means is that for a COLA to be large any given year, inflation needs to surge. And so if 2027's COLA ends up being generous, it'll come at the cost of higher expenses in the near term.

In fact, one big misconception about Social Security COLAs is that they're meant to help seniors get ahead financially. The only thing COLAs are meant to do is match inflation to prevent benefits from automatically falling behind and losing buying power.

There's a big difference between just keeping up and improving your financial picture. And even a large COLA in 2027 won't do the latter.

Keep your expectations in check

As of now, it's looking like the 2027 Social Security COLA may be a lot larger than this year's 2.8% raise. But that's not necessarily a good thing.

In fact, generally speaking, there's little sense in wishing for a giant COLA, because a big raise will always cost you more in the near term. That's just how COLAs work.

Knowing this might make smaller COLAs sting a bit less. It might also empower you to make changes that better your finances in 2027, whether that means reducing some of your spending, relocating to an area where your Social Security checks can go further, or boosting your income with some type of part-time work.
