Anthropic Said to Consider New Model After Calling to Slow AI Development, Heightening Pressure on OpenAI

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - According to a Reuters report citing three people familiar with the matter, Anthropic is evaluating release plans for a new model to counter competitive pressure from OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra. The report did not disclose a final release decision or a specific timeline.

One person familiar with the matter said Anthropic is conducting safety evaluations on the proposed model for release. Internal discussions also touched upon balancing investment in the new model with improving profitability. Anthropic declined to comment on the report.

Prior to the Reuters report, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an article on September 12 advocating for controlling the pace of capability advancements in frontier AI models to allow more time for safety research and independent evaluations.

He also suggested introducing third-party evaluation teams capable of conducting in-depth audits of R&D processes, encouraging frontier AI companies to establish common safety standards, and strengthening international coordination.

GPT-6 Astra Makes Progress in the Enterprise Market

OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra on September 3. OpenAI said the model improves computer operation, software development, cybersecurity, and professional work capabilities.

According to the latest data from Ramp, GPT-6 Astra accounts for about 13% of the enterprise AI spending it tracks, while Anthropic's Claude Fable accounts for around 8%.

OpenRouter data showed that user spending on OpenAI models surpassed Anthropic last week, marking the first time in over two and a half years that OpenAI led user spending on the platform.

Astra's growth in spending tracked by Ramp, along with the performance of OpenAI models on OpenRouter, has prompted some potential investors to reassess Anthropic's position in the enterprise AI market.

Some existing and potential investors believe that switching model suppliers takes a long time for large enterprises, and Astra has not yet posed a significant threat to Anthropic.

Anthropic's Annualized Revenue Remains Higher Than OpenAI's

Reuters reported that as of the end of July 2026, Anthropic's annualized revenue run rate rose from approximately $9 billion at the end of 2025 to over $65 billion, while OpenAI's annualized revenue run rate exceeded $40 billion during the same period.

Internally, Anthropic projects that its 2028 revenue could reach $190 billion to $200 billion. Against the backdrop of market expectations for the company to pursue an IPO, new model releases, enterprise customer retention, and profitability improvements will influence investor judgments regarding its growth prospects.

Besides OpenAI, open-weight models are also lowering the cost for enterprises to deploy AI and expanding customer choices. Whether Anthropic releases new models, the progress of its safety evaluations, and changes in enterprise spending on Ramp and OpenRouter will serve as key metrics to measure its market competitiveness.
