Cathie Wood is the founder, chief investment officer, and chief executive officer of Ark Invest, an investment firm that manages growth-focused exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Wood has built a reputation as a highly forward-looking investor, and she and her team tend to structure their investments around potentially revolutionary developments in categories such as computing hardware, software, fintech, biotech, and space. Along with structuring ETFs around potentially explosive growth bets, Wood also regularly weighs in with forecasts, valuation targets, and scenarios for the future.

On the other hand, the annualized return of roughly 13.8% for her company's flagship Ark Innovation ETF (NYSEMKT: ARKK) since its launch in October 2014 has only roughly matched the S&P 500's average annualized return over the same period. With the Ark Innovation ETF failing to meaningfully outperform the benchmark index since its founding, should investors still trust Wood and Ark's big forecasts for 2030?

Putting Wood's high-profile 2030 targets in perspective

While the Ark Innovation ETF has long been composed mostly of growth stocks positioned to deliver huge returns alongside big tech trends, that hasn't translated into market-crushing performance since its debut. Depending on the time period you look at, there have been stretches when the fund has dramatically underperformed the S&P 500. For example, while the S&P 500 has generated a total return of roughly 84% over the last five years, the Ark Innovation ETF has posted a total return of -30%.

Regardless, the famous investor's high-profile targets for 2030 should also be evaluated on an individual basis. With that in mind, here's my take on a few of Wood's forecasts for 2030:

  • The biggest crypto will reach a market capitalization of $16 trillion: The most recent valuation model released by Ark has a base case for Bitcoin's market capitalization at $16 trillion in 2030 -- working out to a token price of roughly $800,000. In the bull case, the Ark team thinks that it could hit $1.25 million per token in that year. While hitting these price levels isn't outside the realm of possibility, it implies massive gains over recent prices of roughly $78,000 per token and appears unlikely within the forecast window.
  • The AI software market will reach $7 trillion: With artificial intelligence software evolving rapidly and being integrated into an incredible array of business areas, Wood and her research team have said that AI software could be a $7 trillion market in 2030. The methodology used to arrive at this figure is somewhat unclear, and it's possible that a wide range of indirect contributions related to AI software were used to produce that forecast, but most forecasts project the market size to be far below that level.
  • Tesla will hit $2,600 per share: Ark's forecasts suggest Tesla stock will reach $2,600 in 2029 or 2030, a huge leap from its prices around $365 at the end of August. The firm uses a massive growth forecast for the autonomous ride-hailing market, predicting it will be worth $34 trillion annually in 2030, as the foundation for its target. While robotaxis could eventually become a major performance driver for the company, the rollout has proceeded at a far slower pace than previously expected -- and there could be more roadblocks ahead. With Tesla's core auto business facing pressure, modeling a $2,600 share price based on a $34 trillion autonomous ride-hailing market appears overly optimistic. Notably, Wood's team had also set a split-adjusted price target of roughly $1,500 per share for this year back in 2022 -- and the stock would have to more than quadruple from its current level to hit that target.
  • SpaceX will have an enterprise value of $2.5 trillion: In June 2025, Ark's team estimated that Space Exploration Technologies would reach $2.5 trillion in 2030. The company actually briefly hit a market cap of $2.6 trillion and an estimated enterprise value of roughly $2.5 trillion shortly after going public this June. While the company's valuation has since declined, SpaceX has a fair shot at reaching an enterprise value of at least that level in 2030.

In summary, past performance does not dictate future results -- and comparing valuation trends for the Ark Innovation ETF against the performance of the S&P 500 should not be used to dismiss Wood's forecasts out of hand. On the other hand, Wood has a history of making lofty forecasts. She and her team may have incentives to drum up excitement around investments made with the company's funds.
