Circle Stock Is Down More Than 70% From Its All-Time High. Is It Time to Update the Investment Thesis for CRCL Stock?

Source Motley_fool

Key Points

  • Circle went public to much fanfare in 2025, but is now down more than 70% from its all-time high.

  • The stablecoin issuer's latest quarterly financial results were disappointing, putting even more downward pressure on its stock price.

  • Future growth prospects look attractive, given the ongoing expansion of the stablecoin market.

Back in June 2025, Circle Internet Group (NYSE: CRCL) made its stock market debut with much fanfare. At one point last summer, Circle stock traded as high as $299, and the sky seemed to be the limit for how much higher it might go.

But flash forward one year, and the outlook does not look nearly as bright. Shares of Circle Internet Group currently trade for just $85, and a general malaise continues to hover over the crypto market. So is Circle stock a buy going forward, or is it best to look for other opportunities elsewhere?

Circle's recent financial results

A good place to look for answers is Circle's most recent quarterly financial results. In Q2 2026, the company beat its consensus earnings estimate but missed on revenue. As a result, the company's shares sold off, as investors decided Circle just wasn't delivering as planned.

The revenue miss was particularly noteworthy. Investors were already beginning to doubt the stablecoin investment thesis, especially with the crypto market in the doldrums and U.S. congressional leaders unable to pass a key piece of new crypto legislation.

Making matters worse, just weeks before Circle reported Q2 earnings, a consortium of 140 companies, led by a mix of tech and crypto heavyweights, announced the launch of Open USD, an upcoming stablecoin designed to take market share from USDC (CRYPTO: USDC), the stablecoin issued by Circle. That did not augur well for Circle's growth going forward.

Circle's future growth prospects

The good news, if you're thinking about investing in Circle, is that the company still has a surprisingly robust growth story ahead. The company is seeing strong growth in USDC on-chain transaction volume, and the amount of USDC in circulation is up 19% from last year.

Moreover, the company has a new growth narrative developing around its Arc blockchain network. This blockchain, backed by nearly 100 ecosystem partners, is already getting a lot of attention for its potential to advance new use cases in stablecoin finance.

At the same time, Circle continues to roll out other initiatives designed to drive growth, such as the recent approval from the OCC to establish a trust bank. It is also showcasing a new, expanded set of USDC use cases from high-profile financial partners.

So, if anything, the investment thesis for Circle should be revised upwards, not downwards. I'm siding with Cathie Wood of Ark Invest, who recently bought Circle on the dip.

The company appears undervalued rather than overvalued, and $85 looks like an attractive entry price. After all, that's close to the closing price of Circle stock on its first day of trading back in June 2025.
