Investors today must choose between the established social influence of Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) and the experimental computing potential of Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ:RGTI). Which of these tech-driven businesses represents the better addition to your portfolio?

Reddit uses its massive library of human conversation to drive advertising and licensing revenue. Rigetti develops advanced hardware designed to solve problems too complex for standard computers. This comparison explores whether you should favor a profitable community platform or a speculative leap into the next generation of digital infrastructure.

The case for Reddit

Reddit operates a vast platform of over 45,000 active communities where users share information and opinions. The company primarily makes money through digital advertising, but it also generates revenue by licensing its data to companies like Google parent Alphabet for training artificial intelligence. Customer concentration like this adds a layer of risk to the business, as its top ten largest advertisers accounted for approximately 21% of revenue in 2025.

Reddit experienced a significant financial transformation recently. In its 2025 fiscal year (FY), revenue reached $2.2 billion, representing growth of 69.4% compared to the previous year. The company also turned profitable, reporting net income of $529.7 million, which equals a net margin of 24.1%.

The company maintains a very strong liquidity position. As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is zero, and the current ratio is 11.6x. A current ratio measures a company's ability to cover short-term debts with short-term assets, with higher numbers suggesting more flexibility. Free cash flow, which is cash from operations minus capital expenditures, was $684.2 million in FY 2025. Note that stock-based compensation (SBC) represented 49.7% of operating cash flow, which inflates reported cash generation since SBC is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.

The case for Rigetti Computing

Rigetti Computing is a pioneer in the tech stocks landscape, building superconducting quantum processors delivered through the cloud. The company focuses heavily on government and research clients, including DARPA and the Department of Energy. Customer concentration like this adds a layer of risk to the business, as government contracts accounted for approximately 90% of total revenue in 2025. Rigetti is currently working toward delivering a 108-qubit system to international partners to demonstrate the practical power of its hardware.

The financial picture for this quantum developer remains highly speculative. In FY 2025, revenue reached $7.1 million, which was a decrease of 34.3% from the prior year. The company reported a net loss of $216.2 million for the period. This resulted in a net margin of negative 3,050%, illustrating the massive costs required to develop such specialized technology.

Despite high spending, the balance sheet provides a temporary cushion. As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is zero, meaning total debt does not exceed shareholder equity. The current ratio is 37.4x, indicating a large pile of cash relative to immediate obligations. However, free cash flow was negative $77.2 million for FY 2025, showing that the company is still consuming cash to fund its operations.

Risk profile comparison

Reddit faces several hurdles that could stall its momentum. The company is heavily dependent on user growth and engagement, meaning any drop in daily active users could hurt its ability to sell ads. Since 94% of revenue comes from advertising, the business is sensitive to changes in marketing budgets and competition from the likes of Meta Platforms. Additionally, the platform relies on volunteer moderators, which could lead to content quality issues if moderation standards are not maintained effectively.

Rigetti Computing operates with a much narrower safety margin. It is highly dependent on a small number of government customers, making it vulnerable to any shifts in public funding or policy. There is also significant technical risk, as there is no guarantee the company will achieve quantum advantage before competitors like IBM. The capital-intensive nature of building quantum computers means Rigetti may eventually need to raise more money, potentially diluting existing shareholders.

Valuation comparison

Reddit appears much more reasonably priced based on its ability to generate profit, while Rigetti carries a much higher price tag relative to its current sales.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?

Weighing whether to invest in the high-growth stocks of Reddit or Rigetti depends on your risk tolerance. For those seeking a high risk, high reward play, Rigetti Computing is the stock to pick. Investors who want a more conservative investment should choose Reddit.

Rigetti's focus is on the nascent technology of quantum computers. Because the field is still young, the company's revenue is volatile. While its sales sank in 2025, revenue has rebounded in 2026. The tech enterprise reported $5.1 million in second-quarter revenue, a massive increase from $1.8 million in the prior year. However, its business remains unprofitable, as it posted a net loss of $52.6 million in Q2, up from a loss of $39.7 million in 2025.

Reddit's business is thriving. In Q2, it reported revenue of $805 million, an impressive 61% year-over-year jump and the eighth consecutive quarter of at least 60% growth. The company remains highly profitable, generating Q2 net income of $253 million, a whopping 183% increase over the prior year's $89 million.

Given Reddit's consistently expanding business and strong financial health, the social media giant is my pick over Rigetti's more speculative stock.
