Dow Jones futures fall as inflationary risks rise

Source Fxstreet
  • Dow Jones futures decline as strong US payroll figures boosted Fed rate hike bets.
  • Rising crude oil prices driven by Middle East tensions added fresh inflation concerns for investors.
  • Tech sector resilience lent relative support to futures, balancing broader market weakness.

Dow Jones futures are down by 0.32% to trade near 53,270 during European hours on Monday. Meanwhile, S&P 500 futures steady near 7,720, while Nasdaq 100 futures advance by 0.31% to trade around 29,660. The US stock market will be closed Monday for the Labor Day holiday.

US stock futures trade mixed amid market caution as strong United States (US) jobs data reinforced expectations of a Federal Reserve (Fed) rate hike this month. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, August Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) rose by 162,000, significantly outperforming the forecasted 56,000. Meanwhile, the Unemployment Rate held steady at 4.1%, and annual wage growth slowed less than anticipated to 3.1%.

Traders also adopt a cautious stance as rising crude oil prices stoke fears of rekindled inflationary pressures following a geopolitical escalation between the US and Iran over the weekend. The conflict intensified after the US targeted three Iranian tankers in response to missile attacks on its warships, leading Tehran to establish a new restricted zone around the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the broader market caution, Nasdaq 100 futures gained, driven by advances in semiconductor shares. Chipmakers including Nvidia, Micron, and Intel advanced amid growing optimism surrounding OpenAI’s new GPT model.

US equities hold up as Japan lags and emerging markets edge higher

According to Deutsche Bank, regional performance was mixed, with Japan’s Nikkei sliding “-2.09%” over the week despite a “+1.26%” rebound on Friday, while the “MSCI EM index rose +0.24% (+1.35% Friday).” In contrast, they highlight that “in the US, equities saw a relative outperformance,” even though “the S&P 500 was still barely up last week with a +0.09% gain (-0.38% Friday),” underscoring how even the best‑performing major market struggled to generate meaningful upside.

European equities retreat as rising yields pressure risk assets

Analysts at Deutsche Bank highlight that “with inflationary pressures mounting and yields rising further, that generally put pressure on risk assets around the world.” They note this was “particularly clear in Europe,” where the STOXX 600 “fell -0.81% last week (+0.12% Friday), whilst the DAX fell -1.97% (+0.17% Friday),” underscoring how higher rates and renewed inflation concerns have weighed more heavily on regional equity benchmarks.

Dow Jones FAQs

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, one of the oldest stock market indices in the world, is compiled of the 30 most traded stocks in the US. The index is price-weighted rather than weighted by capitalization. It is calculated by summing the prices of the constituent stocks and dividing them by a factor, currently 0.152. The index was founded by Charles Dow, who also founded the Wall Street Journal. In later years it has been criticized for not being broadly representative enough because it only tracks 30 conglomerates, unlike broader indices such as the S&P 500.

Many different factors drive the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). The aggregate performance of the component companies revealed in quarterly company earnings reports is the main one. US and global macroeconomic data also contributes as it impacts on investor sentiment. The level of interest rates, set by the Federal Reserve (Fed), also influences the DJIA as it affects the cost of credit, on which many corporations are heavily reliant. Therefore, inflation can be a major driver as well as other metrics which impact the Fed decisions.

Dow Theory is a method for identifying the primary trend of the stock market developed by Charles Dow. A key step is to compare the direction of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) and the Dow Jones Transportation Average (DJTA) and only follow trends where both are moving in the same direction. Volume is a confirmatory criteria. The theory uses elements of peak and trough analysis. Dow’s theory posits three trend phases: accumulation, when smart money starts buying or selling; public participation, when the wider public joins in; and distribution, when the smart money exits.

There are a number of ways to trade the DJIA. One is to use ETFs which allow investors to trade the DJIA as a single security, rather than having to buy shares in all 30 constituent companies. A leading example is the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (DIA). DJIA futures contracts enable traders to speculate on the future value of the index and Options provide the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell the index at a predetermined price in the future. Mutual funds enable investors to buy a share of a diversified portfolio of DJIA stocks thus providing exposure to the overall index.
