Investors looking for growth often weigh domestic value against international scale. Choosing between Coupang (NYSE:CPNG) and Five Below (NASDAQ:FIVE) requires balancing South Korea's e-commerce dominance against a rapidly expanding U.S. discount retailer.

Coupang operates a massive logistics network to deliver everything from groceries to electronics across South Korea and Taiwan. Five Below focuses on high-energy, low-cost treasure hunts for American youth. Both companies aim to capture market share in the evolving retail landscape, though their geographic footprints and operational models offer distinct paths for long-term growth.

The case for Coupang

Coupang provides retail, restaurant delivery, and video streaming services through brands like Rocket Now and the WOW membership program. The company serves millions of active customers in South Korea and Taiwan, leveraging its own logistics infrastructure to ensure rapid delivery. Its strategic partnership with Sartori Cheese highlights its focus on distributing perishable U.S. goods to international markets.

In its 2025 fiscal year (FY), revenue reached $34.5 billion, marking an increase of approximately 14.1% compared to the prior year. The company reported a net income of $208.0 million for the period. This growth follows a steady upward trajectory in sales despite fluctuating net margin levels in previous fiscal cycles.

As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was 1.0x, meaning its total debt is equal to its shareholder equity. The current ratio, which measures the ability to pay short-term obligations with current assets, was 1.0x. For FY 2025, free cash flow reached $522.0 million. Note that stock-based compensation (SBC) represented 26.8% of operating cash flow, which inflates reported cash generation since SBC is a non-cash expense added back in the cash flow statement.

The case for Five Below

Five Below operates a value-based retail model targeting kids, teens, and pre-teens with trend-right merchandise. The company manages over 2,000 stores across the U.S., offering products in categories like tech, sports, and fashion. It works with roughly 1,000 vendors to maintain its diverse inventory without relying too heavily on any single supplier.

In FY 2025, revenue reached $4.8 billion, representing growth of 22.9% over the previous fiscal year. Net income for the period was $358.6 million, with a net margin of 7.5%. This performance reflects the company's ability to drive sales through both new store openings and existing locations, a key strength among retail stocks.

Based on its January 2026 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was 0.9x, indicating total debt is slightly lower than shareholder equity. The current ratio stood at 2.0x, indicating a strong capacity to cover near-term liabilities with liquid assets. In FY 2025, the company generated free cash flow of $411.7 million, providing capital for further store expansion.

Risk profile comparison

Coupang faces intense competition in the retail sector from large rivals like Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). The company deals with significant regulatory challenges in South Korea, including privacy-related penalties and government investigations. It also manages operational risks involving the integration of its Farfetch (OTC:FTCHQ) acquisition and suffered a high-profile data breach in 2025.

Five Below is exposed to inflation and rising product costs, which can impact its low-price value proposition. The company depends on merchandise manufactured outside the U.S., making it sensitive to tariffs and trade volatility. Furthermore, it faces legal risks from class action lawsuits regarding growth and inventory management misstatements that could impact future results.

Valuation comparison

Five Below appears cheaper based on future earnings estimates, while Coupang offers a lower P/S ratio, which measures market value against sales over the past twelve months.

Which stock would I buy for 2027?

Between retail players Coupang and Five Below, I would buy Five Below. Coupang's e-commerce business relies heavily on its South Korean customers, yet the company suffered a black eye when it was hacked last year, prompting investigations by the Korean government.

In addition, since the incident was revealed in November of 2025, Coupang's sales growth has steadily declined. Before the data breach was revealed, the company's revenue in the third quarter of 2025 grew 18% year over year. That dropped to 11% in Q4 after the incident was publicized. Sales continued falling in 2026, and in Q2, year-over-year sales growth had slowed to 4%.

Coupang saw some recovery in Q3 of this year, as revenue rose 7% year over year to $10 billion. Even so, investors should monitor the situation to see if the company continues to gain steam in subsequent quarters.

Meanwhile, Five Below is enjoying robust growth in 2026 despite the volatile macroeconomic background. In its fiscal Q2, ended Aug. 1, sales grew 23% to $1.3 billion. The company also raised its 2026 full-year revenue outlook to a range between $5.6 billion to $5.7 billion, up from 2025's $4.8 billion. Five Below's business is doing well and shows no signs of slowing down.
