  • Backlog increased 43% to $23 billion in fiscal 2026.

On its fourth-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, Johnson Controls (NYSE:JCI) announced full-year organic revenue growth, which measures sales expansion excluding acquisitions and divestitures, of more than 8%. The equipment manufacturer is shifting capital toward high-density thermal management to capture demand from data centers and mission-critical facilities. Three things management said stand out.

1. Demand in Mission-Critical Verticals Drives Backlog Expansion

Data center cooling requirements are accelerating as artificial intelligence facilities generate heavy heat loads. That demand expanded the company's backlog, which represents customer orders booked but not yet fulfilled, to a record scale.

Backlog grew 43% to a record $23 billion, reflecting sustained demand for our differentiated technology and capabilities.
-- Marc Vandiepenbeeck, Chief Financial Officer

2. Internal Business System Doubled Capital Efficiency on Factory Expansion

Management planned $900 million in capital expenditures for fiscal 2027, allocated to equipment and facility construction, to expand production. Internal lean manufacturing protocols helped double output per dollar spent relative to past facility builds.

Without the productivity and capital efficiency we are driving across the company, we estimate the capital requirement would have been more than two times higher.
-- Joakim Weidemanis, Chief Executive Officer

3. Restructuring Reallocates Resources Away From Noncore Assets

Management is executing restructuring actions, which are corporate reorganizations to lower operating overhead, by trimming noncore residential assets. The company expects $400 million in restructuring costs to yield $600 million in gross annualized cost savings by fiscal 2029.

While our growth investment is focused on thermal technology, our restructuring actions are concentrated primarily in other parts of our portfolio outside our most technology-differentiated mission-critical verticals.
-- Joakim Weidemanis, Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Customer orders across data centers are accelerating, and leadership isn't hiding its satisfaction.

We exit fiscal 2026 with great momentum, record backlog, and clear visibility into the year ahead.
-- Joakim Weidemanis, Chief Executive Officer

Global manufacturing scale and proprietary liquid cooling designs reinforce its edge in heat management. Management is focused on operational delivery and pricing discipline as new facilities open.

Aligning operations with mission-critical facilities creates durable value as data center power requirements grow.

Our differentiated technological capabilities, our unmatched field presence, and proprietary business system positions us to support customers as their requirements continue to scale and to create increasing value for our shareholders.
-- Joakim Weidemanis, Chief Executive Officer
