Procter & Gamble: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Source The Motley Fool

Key Points

  • First-quarter organic sales increased 4% year over year.

  • Volume growth contributed 2.4 percentage points to overall top-line gains.

  • Over 70% of key U.S. retail customers held or expanded share.

  • Motley Fool Issues Rare "Total Conviction" Buy Alert ›

On its first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings call, held on Oct. 22, 2026, Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG) announced organic sales growth (sales excluding currency shifts, acquisitions, and divestitures) of 4% over the prior year. Volume gains drove more than half of that progress across product categories. For long-term investors, sustained volume expansion signals genuine brand loyalty rather than temporary pricing power.

Three things management said stand out.

1. Targeted Interventions Drive Volume and Structural Operating Leverage

Volume gains of 2.4% drove more than half of the top-line progress in the quarter. Higher volume unlocks operating leverage, which lets profits grow faster than revenue as factory and administrative costs spread over more units.

When we see growth around 4% and volume growth at or above 2%, we have always seen leverage. Think that leverage structurally is increasing.
-- Andre Schulten, Chief Financial Officer

2. Innovation-Backed Pricing Protects Margins Against Surging Input Costs

A $1.4 billion after-tax headwind from commodity and transportation costs threatens earnings this fiscal year. Management relies on structural productivity savings and premium product launches to offset rising costs without slowing sales.

The second component is pricing with innovation. And honestly, I think the momentum we are starting to generate gives us confidence to price with innovation, because we are getting the balance between pricing and product improvements, package improvements claims, communication and retail execution right.
-- Andre Schulten, Chief Financial Officer

3. Market Share Rebound Across Top Retailers Accelerates Domestic Expansion

Retailer relationships are improving rapidly as brand upgrades take hold across store shelves. Over 70% of top U.S. retail partners now hold or expand market share with the company's products.

We now have over 70% of our top U. S. Customers holding or growing share, up from less than 10% in the first half fiscal 2026, and 50% in the second half of last fiscal year.
-- Andre Schulten, Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Global consumer markets face persistent cost pressures from energy prices and currency fluctuations. High brand equity, automated supply chains, and deep retailer integration position the business to protect its long-term margins.

We are adapting our capabilities, systems, organization structure to take advantage of significant growth opportunities we see across our markets, and overcome the external landscape changes impacting our industry.
-- Andre Schulten, Chief Financial Officer

Execution speed across product categories remains the primary driver of future market expansion. Expanding consumer trial through superior product performance keeps retail channels growing.

In summary, challenging markets like the ones we compete in today [are] an opportunity for P&G to lead. We have the brands, the capability, and most importantly, the people required to win.
-- Andre Schulten, Chief Financial Officer
