eBay Inc. operates one of the world's largest e-commerce marketplaces, facilitating billions of dollars in gross merchandise volume annually across its diversified platform ecosystem. The company maintains a significant competitive advantage through its established network effects, extensive seller base, and integrated payment and logistics solutions. With approximately 12,300 employees and a market capitalization of $50.2 billion, eBay continues to serve as a critical infrastructure provider for digital commerce globally.
In a strange twist, Peggy Alford's sale of eBay shares may actually bolster the buy case for the consumer discretionary stock rather than undermining it.
Alford received stock options on a vesting schedule. With that, she sold some of her shares to meet tax liabilities. But amid the vesting and sale, her share count actually increased, as she retained some of the shares she bought. Consequently, she now owns 2,655 more common shares than before the transactions.
This looks like a sensible move. Its revenue for the first half of 2026 was $6.2 billion, 17% higher than in the same year-ago period. Additionally, the nearly $1.1 billion in net income during that time surged 23% higher over the same time frame. Consequently, the stock is higher by about 25% over the last year.
Finally, its 23 P/E ratio suggests eBay stock trades at a reasonable valuation. Thus, given the improving financials and rising stock price, it is understandable that she would use this event to increase her share count.
