Where Will Cardano (ADA) Be in 3 Years?

Key Points

  • Cardano is down more than 90% from its all-time high in 2021 and no longer ranks among the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market cap.

  • Over the past five years, Cardano has failed to become a leader in decentralized finance (DeFi).

  • If Cardano does not find a new catalyst soon, it could be headed to zero by 2030.

If you're a Cardano (CRYPTO: ADA) investor, it's time to start getting worried. While other cryptocurrencies are showing signs of recovery in 2026, Cardano is still languishing. For the year, it's still down a whopping 27%.

To put that into perspective, it's even worse than Dogecoin's performance, which is down 20% for the year. If investors have completely given up on Cardano, that doesn't bode well for where it could be in three years.

Cardano's pattern of underperformance

Cardano was once the leading rival to Ethereum, the world's top Layer-1 blockchain network. Just five years ago, Cardano ranked as the fourth-largest cryptocurrency in the world, with a $66 billion market cap. Today, it's trading for less than $0.25 and has a market cap of just $9 billion.

Even worse, Cardano continues to underperform its peers. Just look at the performance of the other top Layer-1 blockchain networks in 2026. Solana is down 5%, Ethereum is down 8%, and Avalanche is down 9%. So one would expect Cardano to be down a similar percentage this year. It's not. It's down 27%.

Any catalysts for Cardano?

Over the past five years, new catalysts have appeared for Cardano. But most of them have turned out to be nonstarters. Take Cardano's entry into decentralized finance (DeFi) in 2021, when it acquired smart contract functionality. After five years, Cardano still ranks a paltry 37th among all blockchains in Total Value Locked (TVL), ranking far behind the likes of Ethereum, Solana, and Avalanche. So that obviously didn't pan out.

The new catalyst for Cardano is supposed to be artificial intelligence (AI). Somehow, the thinking goes, Cardano will become a blockchain payment network for AI agents, and transaction activity (from bots, not humans) will soon be off the charts.

But is that really going to be the case? Ethereum and Solana are making far greater progress here, and AI-centric blockchains such as Bittensor are springing up.

Most disappointing of all, spot Cardano ETFs have failed to materialize. These days, if a cryptocurrency doesn't have a spot ETF, it won't see any traction with either retail or institutional investors. Money simply has nowhere to go. By way of comparison, spot ETFs exist for Ethereum and Solana.

Cardano in 2030

Unfortunately, Cardano could be headed to zero by the year 2030. It's already down a staggering 92% from its all-time high in 2021 and currently trades for less than the cost of a shopping bag at your favorite supermarket. So it won't take much to trigger a full-blown implosion.

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has even admitted as much. In June, he warned of "a wave of failures" across the Cardano blockchain ecosystem. No wonder crypto investors are spooked.

At the end of the day, there are many better crypto buys than Cardano right now. Until Cardano can gain some momentum in DeFi, I'm avoiding it. By 2030, Cardano will likely no longer rank among the top 25 cryptocurrencies in the world. This is a shame, because just five years ago, Cardano looked like a world-beater.
