Foolish Take

Both Marvell Technology and Broadcom specialize in developing custom semiconductor products, a key capability amid the artificial intelligence boom as tech giants, such as Google, race to build the computing infrastructure required for AI systems. Examining their revenue trends reveal insights for investors weighing whether to buy stock in these companies.

Broadcom's far higher revenue totals demonstrate the size of its business relative to Marvell. Its offerings are more expansive than Marvell's, so it makes sense that its sales would be larger. But what is telling is the rate of revenue growth Broadcom is experiencing. The $29.6 billion it made in its fiscal third quarter, ended Aug. 2, was an impressive 86% year-over-year increase. By comparison, Marvell's fiscal Q2 sales of $2.7 billion represents 37% year-over-year growth.

That said, a factor in Marvell's lower revenue expansion is its narrow focus on optical connectivity. As AI data centers grow too big for standard copper connections, Marvell's specialization in scaling optical interconnects to move data efficiently across large distances provides it with an edge to capture sales from hyperscalers. The company does more than connectivity, but this area gives it a foot in the door to eventually eat at Broadcom's business.
