Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) may be down more than 60% from its all-time high from last summer, but that's not stopping forward-looking crypto investors from speculating on what might happen during the next bull market cycle.

Tom Lee, co-founder of Wall Street research firm Fundstrat and chairman of Bitmine Immersion Technologies (NYSE: BMNR), has emerged as one of the loudest voices predicting massive gains in the price of Ethereum. In fact, he thinks Ethereum could eventually hit a price of $250,000. Given its current price of just $2,000, that would represent a stunning 125x return on investment.

Signs of life for Ethereum

The good news, if you're thinking about investing in Ethereum, is that there have been some recent signs of life. In July, for example, Ethereum outperformed both the Nasdaq-100 and Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC). And it did so handily. Ethereum beat tech stocks by 25 percentage points, and Bitcoin by 11 percentage points. That's something Lee has been quick to point out, suggesting it could be foreshadowing a massive bull market rally for Ethereum.

But just keep in mind: This could also be a dead cat bounce. After all, Ethereum is still down nearly 40% for the year. And recent shakeups at the Ethereum Foundation suggest that there's enormous internal dissension about where the cryptocurrency is headed next.

However, Ethereum does have a new strategic road map that will take it to the year 2029. There are also plans for a major overhaul of the Ethereum blockchain in order to make it faster, cheaper to use, more secure, and more scalable.

ETH 2.0

According to Lee, Ethereum is undergoing a major transformation that will prepare it for the next big wave of innovation. He's convinced that Ethereum will emerge as the blockchain of choice for AI agents. He's also convinced that new trends on Wall Street, such as real-world asset (RWA) tokenization and stablecoins, will power the next wave of growth at Ethereum.

In fact, he's now referring to this transformation as "ETH 2.0." Ethereum has already become a powerhouse in decentralized finance (DeFi). But now comes the really big transformation, when Ethereum becomes deeply embedded into the core IT infrastructure of Wall Street.

How likely is this scenario?

Ethereum has had some phenomenal runs in the past. In 2020, for example, Ethereum soared in value by 472%, amid all the hype and hoopla of new DeFi innovations. And, last summer, Ethereum doubled in price in the span of just one month, as it hit a new all-time high of $4,954. So it definitely has explosive upside potential.

That may be the case, but investors should take the $250,000 price target with a grain of salt. How is it possible that Ethereum will suddenly bust out of its sandbox, take over Wall Street, and become the future of money?

Stranger things have happened, no doubt, but I'm keeping my expectations in check when it comes to Ethereum. It certainly looks undervalued right now. But if Ethereum is still trading near $2,000 by the end of the year, I wouldn't be surprised.
