Trump Says Data Centers Surpass Oil: Will AI Stocks See a New Surge?

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey -  Donald Trump elevating data centers to a strategic level on par with oil undoubtedly provides a policy endorsement for the industry, potentially driving a structural rally in AI stocks.

On August 7, Eastern Time, former U.S. President Donald Trump publicly emphasized that data centers could be more important than oil. In an interview with Punchbowl News, he stated, "Texas seems to be against building data centers, which I think is a mistake because data centers could be more important than oil."

Trump's remarks are not merely slogans, but a declaration that competition in the AI industry is escalating from pure "software algorithms and computing chips" to a national security strategic high ground of digital infrastructure and energy control. However, can Trump's comments spark a new wave of rallies in recently sluggish AI-related stocks?

In the first half of 2026, global AI-related stocks experienced explosive growth, particularly with memory chip stocks like Micron and SK Hynix posting stunning gains. Entering the second half of the year, the market's attitude toward AI shifted from blind enthusiasm to a rigorous scrutiny of return on investment (ROI) and monetization of capital expenditures (CAPEX), leading to a collective correction in global AI stocks, with maximum drawdowns for AI stocks like Micron and Intel reaching 40% or even higher at one point.

Trump elevating data centers to a national security strategy on par with oil undoubtedly injects a highly powerful policy endorsement into the AI industry. In the long run, this is indeed expected to trigger another wave of surging prices. However, market capital will no longer blindly chase all AI stocks, but will instead shift precisely toward hardware and energy giants that can resolve physical bottlenecks such as power shortages, cooling deficits, and grid infrastructure constraints.

In addition, Meta( META ), Microsoft ( MSFT ), Alphabet ( GOOG) and other tech giants' capital expenditures on data centers and power infrastructure have exploded exponentially, and the market is closely scrutinizing the actual monetization capabilities of their AI services. If they fail to meet market expectations, their stock prices will also face a sell-off. Simply put, this announcement portends a new wave of structural market trends for AI stocks, rather than a collective rally.
