US July Nonfarm Payrolls Unexpectedly Fall by 23,000 as Cooling Labor Market Bolsters Fed Rate Cut Expectations

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - The latest data released by the U.S. Department of Labor shows that U.S. nonfarm payrolls decreased by 23,000 in July, ending the previous trend of continuous growth and indicating that the U.S. labor market is cooling down significantly. Meanwhile, the July unemployment rate fell to 4.1% from 4.2% in June, but this was mainly affected by changes in labor force participation and did not fully reflect an improvement in labor demand.

In terms of sector performance, the labor market showed clear divergence in July. The healthcare industry continued to grow, while employment in local government education and the retail sector declined, weighing down the overall nonfarm payroll performance. Nonfarm payrolls had increased by only 57,000 in June, already indicating weakening hiring willingness among companies, and the turn to negative job growth in July further intensified market concerns over a U.S. economic slowdown.

The weak employment data also shifted market expectations for the Federal Reserve's policy path. Previously, the Fed kept interest rates unchanged at its July meeting and emphasized that future decisions would depend on inflation and employment data. This nonfarm report showed increased pressure on the labor market, prompting the market to raise its bets on future rate cuts by the Fed once again.

Following the release of the data, gold ( XAUUSD) surged in the short term, with the price of gold jumping over $50 in just 15 minutes, reflecting rising market expectations for Fed rate cuts.

Analysts believe that the July nonfarm payroll data signals further cooling in the U.S. labor market, but a single month of data is still insufficient to confirm that the economy has entered a recession. Going forward, the market will continue to monitor inflation trends, consumer spending, and subsequent employment data to gauge whether the Fed will embark on a more pronounced easing cycle this year.
