Your AI Memory Keeps You Tied to One Chatbot

Billionaire investor Mark Cuban says AI memory keeps consumers tied to one chatbot. Switching costs will stay high until a standard export format exists, he argued on X.

Cuban framed it as a question, asking followers whether he was right. However, many users rejected the premise, arguing that today’s models can read almost any file without a shared format.

Why Does AI Memory Raise Switching Costs?

Cuban, who recently gave an AI jobs warning, built this case on volume. The more someone uses a model, the more it stores, and the harder that data is to move.

He did not claim a transfer is impossible. Instead, he said moving AI memory remains far harder for regular users than saving an Excel or Word file.

In March, Anthropic opened Claude’s memory feature to free users and let newcomers paste in chat histories from rivals such as ChatGPT, Bloomberg reported.

Meanwhile, Anthropic and OpenAI launched cheaper AI models only hours apart in September. That race matters more as Anthropic prepares its November IPO.

Is a Standard Format Even Necessary?

Several users said any chatbot can list what it knows and tell people what to paste into the next one.

That holds up only in part. ChatGPT exports chats as a ZIP file, but the archive contains raw history, not a ready profile.

Another route is Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP). The 2024 open standard lets any AI model connect to outside data. In theory, a user’s AI memory could then live outside any single chatbot.

Businesses already switch with less friction. Microsoft, for example, has begun swapping in its own models for OpenAI and Anthropic inside Excel and Outlook.

Still, habit may be the bigger barrier. One user compared it to people who still use Hotmail, even though exporting email is easy.

For AI users, the takeaway is that their AI memory is portable today, but only with manual effort. Some already skip the issue by running AI models locally. As chatbots compete for loyalty, the first to make switching a single click could gain an edge.

Dollar presses 102 as the 10-year yield sits at 5.14% — and October hike odds are only 17%The dollar index closed at 101.99 (+0.20%) on Monday after briefly topping 102.07, while the 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.14% and the 2-year hit 4.774% — yet futures price only about a 17% chance of a hike at the October 27-28 FOMC, versus roughly 90% for December. The driver is a global bond selloff, not a Fed repricing: France's 10-year OAT jumped to 4.84% ~ 4.94% and the OAT-Bund spread widened to 140 ~ 146bp. Here are the levels, the cross-asset read-through and what to watch.
