Forex Today: Fedspeak takes centre stage

The US Dollar (USD) has traded with gains for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday, managing to revisit levels last seen in late July. In the meantime, further tightening by the Fed remains at the centre of almost every debate, while the steady uncertainty on the geopolitical front has also contributed to the move higher in the buck.

Here is what you need to know on Friday, September 25:

The US Dollar Index (DXY) has climbed to the 101.30-101.40 band, approaching the area of three-month peaks. Durable Goods Orders are due, seconded by the final print of the U-Mich Consumer Sentiment. In addition, the Fed’s Williams, Schmid and Hammack are expected to speak.

EUR/USD has remained under pressure, slipping back to the 1.1360 zone, or multi-week lows. Germany’s Consumer Confidence tracked by GfK is due alongside the ECB’s M3 Money Supply and Loans to Households/Companies figures. In addition, the ECB’s Vujcic is due to speak.

GBP/USD has receded to fresh three-month lows, with a potential challenge to the 1.3200 contention zone emerging in the near term. The GfK’s Consumer Confidence will be the sole event across the Channel.

USD/JPY has advanced further and come just pips away from the 159.00 hurdle, or fresh three-week tops. The next event on the domestic calendar will be the release of the BoJ Minutes on September 28.

AUD/USD’s decline has faltered just ahead of the key 0.7000 level, approaching the area of two-month troughs. The RBA’s interest rate decision will be the next key event in Oz on September 29.

Front-month WTI futures have regained further traction, bouncing to the boundaries of the $96.00 mark per barrel amid the unabated effervescence in the Middle East.

Gold has retreated to seven-week lows and is now approaching the $4,200 mark per troy ounce. The yellow metal’s extra weakness has followed another positive day in the US Dollar along with further advances in US Treasury yields across the curve.

October hike odds climb toward 60% as Goldman and BofA both flip — what Warsh's "dose of accommodation" really changedRate futures now price roughly 55% to 62% for a 25bp hike at the October 27-28 FOMC, up from about 30% before Chair Warsh's post-meeting framing that the Fed is merely "removing some accommodation." Memory chips surge, Nasdaq notches a second straight record close — why the Dow fell 185 points anywayMicron gained 5%, SanDisk 6.8%, Seagate 4% and Western Digital 3% as the memory complex led the Nasdaq Composite to a second consecutive record close of 27,244.28. But the Dow fell 185 points as JPMorgan, Wells Fargo and Schwab slid more than 3% each — a split tape that says more about positioning than about the economy.

US input costs rose at the fastest pace in four years — the September flash PMI beat is an inflation story, not a growth storyUS September flash PMIs came in far above expectations, with the composite at 58.4, a five-year high. But the detail that moved markets was input cost inflation at its fastest since October 2022, driven by fuel, transport and supply shortages. Brent is back above $100 and the 10-year Treasury yield has hit its highest since 2007.
