US Retail Giant Kroger Cuts 37% of Jobs: What Does It Mean for KR Stock Price?

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - US supermarket chain operator Kroger (KR) plans to eliminate about 3,000 corporate and functional roles over the next three years, accounting for approximately 37% of Kroger's headquarters workforce. If fully implemented, the company's corporate headcount will drop from about 8,200 to around 5,200, making it one of the largest workforce reductions in Kroger's 143-year history.

According to an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg, new Chief Executive Officer Greg Foran told employees after an all-company conference call that Kroger's current organizational hierarchy and operating costs are overly complex. He stressed the need to streamline the structure to accelerate decision-making and channel more resources into price cuts, shopping experience improvements, and frontline employee development. The company expects to announce the affected departments and specific roles in the coming months.

The layoffs mark a major step in the reform driven by Foran since taking the helm in February this year. Foran previously served as head of Walmart's U.S. business, where he helped turn around its sluggish performance in the 2010s. Now, he is attempting to bring similar low-price and efficiency strategies to Kroger to counter expanding market share from rivals such as Walmart, Costco, and Aldi.

Foran stated that as technologies like artificial intelligence are gradually integrated into workflows, the company needs to reduce redundant positions and realign employee responsibilities. Kroger recently appointed a Chief Data and AI Officer, aiming to enhance the efficiency of its supply chain, pricing, and store operations through data analytics, automation, and AI.

Kroger has already launched its most aggressive price cuts in years and taken a tougher stance in vendor negotiations. The company previously announced it would roll out price reductions across all of its stores, but Walmart expanded its promotions during the same period to cover more than 7,000 items. This means that even if Kroger lowers costs through layoffs, it may need to reinvest most of the savings into price competition, meaning short-term profit margins may not necessarily improve in tandem.

Meanwhile, Kroger continues to bring in executives with Walmart backgrounds. In August, the company appointed former Walmart executive Nate Faust as its first Chief E-commerce Officer, and later hired Mark Ibbotson as Chief Store Operations Officer, alongside reshuffling its human resources and data management teams. These consecutive executive moves indicate that Foran is accelerating the overhaul of Kroger's management framework in an effort to shorten decision-making chains and bolster execution efficiency.

From a stock price perspective, large-scale layoffs typically improve market expectations for cost control and operating margins. Kroger had already cut nearly 1,000 corporate jobs last year; trimming an additional 3,000 roles signals that management is pushing for a more thorough reform of organizational efficiency. If the cost savings translate into lower merchandise prices, better store service, and faster e-commerce growth, the company's competitiveness and long-term cash flow could improve, providing positive support for KR's stock price.

However, layoffs alone cannot solve the issue of declining market share. Kroger has recently faced persistent competition from discount retailers such as Walmart, Costco, and Aldi, while consumers have become increasingly price-conscious in an inflationary environment. If the company slashes prices without driving foot traffic and sales growth, its profit margins could instead face a double squeeze. Additionally, ongoing headcount cuts could hurt internal execution, employee morale, and store support capabilities, while severance and related expenses may also arise in the initial stages of restructuring.

From the daily chart, KR most recently closed at $62.56 and rose to $62.90 in after-hours trading. The stock price has broken through a multi-month downtrend line while climbing above its 20-day moving average of $59.87 and 60-day moving average of $58.34, signaling that the short-term trend is turning from weak to strong.

Currently, the first resistance level lies at $63–$64, with a more key resistance at the 0.5 Fibonacci retracement level of $65.33. If the stock breaks through $65.33 on heavy volume and holds above it at the daily close, upside targets to watch include $68 and $71.78; in a strong bullish scenario, it could retest the previous high of $76.52.

On the downside, initial focus is on the breakout support zone at $61–$62, followed by $59.43–$59.87. If the stock price falls back below the 20-day moving average, it may retest the 60-day moving average at $58.34; if this level fails to hold, the trend will weaken again, potentially pulling back toward $56 or even $54.14.

The RSI currently stands at 63.47, above its smoothed signal line of 53.10, indicating that bullish momentum is building, though it has not yet entered distinctly overbought territory. Overall, expectations of cost reductions from the layoffs are moderately positive for KR's stock price in the short term, and the technical picture has improved; however, only a breakthrough above $65.33 would further confirm a medium-term reversal.
