Japan, South Korea Stocks Diverge Ahead of Nvidia Earnings: KOSPI Surges Past 6,800, Nikkei Opens Lower, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix Buck Trend

Source Tradingkey

TradingKey - Japan and South Korea stock markets diverge at the open! South Korean stocks surge past 6,800 points, while Japanese stocks open lower and drift down, as Samsung and SK Hynix rally together.

During the Asian trading session on August 26, major stock indices in Japan and South Korea generally fluctuated, both opening slightly lower to start the day's trading. However, their subsequent trajectories diverged: South Korea's KOSPI Index opened lower but moved higher, while the Nikkei 225 Index opened lower and continued to slide.

The KOSPI Index rose 1.01% after the open, breaking above 6,800 points to trade at 6,810.62; its two major heavyweights both gained, with SK Hynix rising 0.89% to 1,693,000 KRW and Samsung Electronics advancing 1.07% to 260,000 KRW.

The Nikkei 225 Index opened lower and drifted down, falling 0.42% to trade at 65,578.15 points. Heavyweight stocks were mixed, with Kioxia falling 1.42% to approach the 50,000 mark at 50,530 JPY, while SoftBank rose 0.59% to 5,117 JPY.

Market focus is broadly centered on the upcoming earnings report of Nvidia (NVDA) and the latest Federal Reserve policy signals. Investors have turned cautious ahead of key economic data and major earnings releases, keeping global semiconductor and tech heavyweights in consolidation. Meanwhile, the yen's recent volatile strengthening has put pressure on short-term profit expectations for Japanese exporters, weighing on the Nikkei 225 Index's morning performance.
