For much of its history, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) has been one of the top-performing assets in the world. No wonder, then, that crypto investors continue to hold out hope that Bitcoin will soon recover and go on another of its epic rallies.

Notably, Cathie Wood of Ark Invest continues to double down on her bullish price targets for Bitcoin. Despite Bitcoin's recent downturn, she still thinks it's capable of hitting a price of $1.25 million within the next five years. Based on an Aug. 7 price of roughly $65,000, that's a head-spinning gain of 1,823%.

Why is Cathie Wood so bullish on Bitcoin?

There are several reasons why Cathie Wood continues to bang the table for Bitcoin. A major factor is institutional adoption, which refers to the growing number of banks, financial institutions, and corporations that are embracing Bitcoin.

Powering this institutional adoption is a new wave of crypto legislation. The key focal point right now is the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (also known as the Clarity Act). If and when the bill is passed, it could open the floodgates for more U.S. companies -- even those that have been crypto-skeptical in the past -- to embrace Bitcoin.

Another key reason is that many investors continue to view Bitcoin as a hedge against macroeconomic and geopolitical risk. Especially for younger investors, Bitcoin is "digital gold." It is a store of value and a hedge against things going terribly wrong both at home and abroad.

Underpinning Bitcoin's ability to act as a hedge is its relative scarcity. According to the Bitcoin algorithm, only 21 million coins can ever exist, and 20 million of those are already in circulation. This helps to ensure that the value of Bitcoin can never be "inflated away" by a massive issuance of new coins. The same, unfortunately, can't be said of governments that issue fiat currencies.

How likely is a price of $1.25 million?

Keep in mind, though, that Bitcoin is unlikely to produce the same level of returns as it did in its early years. Back in 2013, for example, Bitcoin exploded in price by 5,428% in the span of just 12 months. That was a unique moment in Bitcoin's early history. In many ways, Bitcoin is increasingly acting like a high-beta tech stock, which will cap its future returns.

For that reason, Cathie Wood's base-case scenario of Bitcoin reaching $750,000 is more likely. It would "only" require Bitcoin to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 63% over the next five years. That's a tall task for most assets, but not necessarily for Bitcoin, which has a stellar track record of delivering triple-digit returns with impressive regularity.

Down 49% from the all-time high of last October, Bitcoin looks like a "buy the dip" candidate right now. This proven survivor of many crises is cheap again. As long as you focus on its long-run potential, it could turn out to be one of the best investments you make in 2026.
