Indonesian Rupiah struggles as Consumer Confidence drops to weakest level since September 2025

Source Fxstreet
  • USD/IDR advances as the Indonesian Rupiah weakens as July Consumer Confidence dropped to 116.8, a third straight monthly decline.
  • Bank Indonesia omitted specific drivers behind the drop, maintaining a reassuring stance that economic confidence overall "remains stable."
  • US Dollar demand grows amid heightened US-Iran conflict and Strait of Hormuz tensions.

USD/IDR holds gains after registering over 0.5% losses in the previous trading day, hovering around 17,860 during the Asian hours on Monday. The pair continues to trade with an upward bias as the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) faces pressure following the release of domestic Consumer Confidence data. The index slid to 116.8 in July from 117.8 in June, marking its third consecutive monthly decline and pushing sentiment down to its lowest level since September 2025's reading of 115.0.

Despite the persistent drop, Bank Indonesia (BI) refrained from detailing the specific drivers behind the decline. Instead, the central bank maintained a reassuring tone, stating that the index signals economic confidence "remains stable." BI further emphasized that overall consumer optimism continues to be supported by a strong perception of present economic conditions, alongside solid expectations for future economic performance.

Additionally, the USD/IDR pair receives support as the US Dollar (USD) gains on rising safe-haven demand amid geopolitical tensions remaining high as the ongoing United States (US)-Iran conflict enters a critical diplomatic phase, with intense military engagements and strategic pressure surrounding the Strait of Hormuz driving market caution.

Iran stated that talks with Oman to establish a safe shipping route through the strategic waterway are nearing an agreement, though Tehran cautioned that any deal would not result in an immediate reopening. Meanwhile, Iran-backed Houthi militants in Yemen claimed a recent attack on Saudi Arabia’s Jazan refinery, and a tanker operated by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. came under attack in the Strait. Tehran rejected direct negotiations with the United States (US) for now, citing alleged breaches of the interim peace deal reached in June.

Indonesia eyes smooth BI leadership transition as markets focus on policy continuity

Analysts at Commerzbank note that political attention is now turning to the leadership at Bank Indonesia, with local media reporting that President Prabowo is preparing to submit a shortlist of candidates to replace Perry Warjiyo as BI Governor. They highlight that Acting Governor Destry Damayanti is widely viewed as the frontrunner and “regarded by markets as the candidate most likely to preserve policy continuity.” According to Commerzbank, Parliament is expected to review the nominations after returning from recess on 14 August, with the approval process “expected to take one to two weeks.”
