Crypto Today: Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP extend recovery despite ETFs outflows

Source Fxstreet
  • Bitcoin edges higher above $82,000, building strong structural support despite roughly $229 million in ETF outflows last week.
  • Ethereum recovers above $2,400 as bulls strive to regain trend control, backed by a subtle recovery in momentum indicators.
  • XRP has reclaimed $1.30 immediate support despite renewed weekly ETF outflows, while moving averages limit upside.

Cryptocurrencies are broadly and gradually recovering on Monday, with Bitcoin (BTC) gaining ground above $82,000. The largest crypto by market capitalization recently tapped robust support near $82,000, prompting buy-the-dip opportunities and a renewed recovery outlook.

Ethereum (ETH) is edging higher above $2,400 as bulls push to regain control over the trend. With short-term support structure in place, the path of least resistance could stay upward, as bulls eye another move toward $2,600.

Ripple (XRP), meanwhile, hovers above the key $1.30 support, which has recently been reclaimed following last week’s macro-driven sell-off. Still, the remittance token must sustain the recovery above the key moving average resistance cluster to retain buyer interest.

Capital outflows weigh on crypto market sentiment

Major cryptocurrencies continued to face fading investor interest last week, with Bitcoin spot Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) posting $229 million in outflows through Friday.

The outflows were driven primarily by macroeconomic headwinds as investors appeared to reassess their risk exposure after the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report showed inflation pressures in the United States remained elevated.

Market participants are currently pricing in an 85% probability that the Federal Reserve (Fed) will hold interest rates in the 3.75-4.00% range at next week's monetary policy meeting. Despite this outlook, US inflation runs above the long-term 2% target, raising the odds of a December rate hike.

Ethereum spot ETFs logged the third straight bearish week, with roughly $320 million in outflows through Friday. The steady outflow trend aligns with recent concerns about the macro environment and sticky geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, as Oil and energy prices remain high. Nonetheless, cumulative inflows remain positive at $12.9 billion, with net assets at approximately $15 billion, underscoring investors' long-term positive outlook on Ethereum.

XRP spot ETFs, on the other hand, recorded $1.8 million in outflows last week, breaking a robust 13-week bullish streak. That said, this shift in flows alone is not enough to confirm a bearish trend. Therefore, this week’s outlook will provide more insight into the direction XRP spot ETFs will take. ETF inflows help cushion the token against headwinds and reinforce a bullish outlook.

Technical analysis: Bitcoin recovery builds momentum

Bitcoin trades at $82,940, holding well above the 50-day, 100-day and 200-day Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs) at $80,625, $77,128 and $75,968, respectively, keeping the broader bias constructive despite the latest consolidation.

The SuperTrend line at $79,664 adds another layer of underlying demand, while the Relative Strength Index (RSI) near 52 suggests neutral momentum and the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) remains in negative territory, hinting that upside progress is steady but not aggressive.

BTC/USDT daily chart

On the downside, initial support lies at the 50-day EMA around $80,625, ahead of the SuperTrend area near $79,664. A deeper pullback would expose the 100-day EMA at $77,128, with the 200-day EMA at $75,968 expected to act as a more substantial medium-term floor as long as buyers defend the broader uptrend.

Altcoins technical outlook: Ethereum and XRP bulls stage a subtle comeback

Ethereum trades at $2,436, consolidating between underlying moving average support and nearby overhead resistance. Price holds above the 100-day and 200-day EMAs, currently around $2,360 and $2,311, suggesting the broader uptrend structure remains intact, yet it remains capped below the 50-day EMA at roughly $2,484 and the SuperTrend line near $2,676.

The MACD stays in negative territory with a widening downside bias, while the RSI hovers near 41, hinting that recovery attempts remain fragile for now.

ETH/USDT daily chart

Initial resistance appears at the 50-day EMA around $2,484, and a daily close above this barrier would open the way toward the SuperTrend resistance zone near $2,676. On the downside, immediate support is at the 100-day EMA near $2,360, with the 200-day EMA near $2,311 acting as a more strategic floor. A break below this level would likely strengthen the bearish tone and expose deeper losses.

XRP, meanwhile, trades above $1.31, extending a corrective phase with a bearish near-term bias as price holds beneath all the key moving averages. The 100-day EMA around $1.34 is the first overhead cap, followed by a tight cluster of the 200-day and 50-day EMAs just under $1.38, reinforcing the impression that the market is still trading within a broader downside structure defined by the descending trend line.

Momentum is soft, with the RSI near 39 and the MACD histogram negative but slightly improving, hinting at waning downside pressure rather than a confirmed bullish reversal.

XRP/USDT daily chart

Initial resistance lies at the 100-day EMA at $1.34, where a daily close above would be needed to ease immediate selling pressure. Beyond that, the 200-day EMA at $1.38 and the 50-day EMA at $1.38 form a more substantial barrier, while the SuperTrend line near $1.47 marks a higher resistance zone that would have to be reclaimed to negate the prevailing bearish structure.

With no clear nearby moving-average or structural support on the daily chart, any fresh dip from current levels would leave XRP vulnerable to probing lower chart levels until new demand emerges on the daily timeframe.

Crypto ETF FAQs

An Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) is an investment vehicle or an index that tracks the price of an underlying asset. ETFs can not only track a single asset, but a group of assets and sectors. For example, a Bitcoin ETF tracks Bitcoin’s price. ETF is a tool used by investors to gain exposure to a certain asset.

Yes. The first Bitcoin futures ETF in the US was approved by the US Securities & Exchange Commission in October 2021. A total of seven Bitcoin futures ETFs have been approved, with more than 20 still waiting for the regulator’s permission. The SEC says that the cryptocurrency industry is new and subject to manipulation, which is why it has been delaying crypto-related futures ETFs for the last few years.

Yes. The SEC approved in January 2024 the listing and trading of several Bitcoin spot Exchange-Traded Funds, opening the door to institutional capital and mainstream investors to trade the main crypto currency. The decision was hailed by the industry as a game changer.

The main advantage of crypto ETFs is the possibility of gaining exposure to a cryptocurrency without ownership, reducing the risk and cost of holding the asset. Other pros are a lower learning curve and higher security for investors since ETFs take charge of securing the underlying asset holdings. As for the main drawbacks, the main one is that as an investor you can’t have direct ownership of the asset, or, as they say in crypto, “not your keys, not your coins.” Other disadvantages are higher costs associated with holding crypto since ETFs charge fees for active management. Finally, even though investing in ETFs reduces the risk of holding an asset, price swings in the underlying cryptocurrency are likely to be reflected in the investment vehicle too.
