Google approves Anthropic's Claude for developers as fresh AI doom warning lands

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) has now given the green light for engineers at the company to use the Opus 5 model from rival AI firm, Anthropic for internal coding tasks, according to Business Insider, citing two employees and a company spokesperson.

The decision lands as an AI safety researcher from Google DeepMind joined a crew of former Anthropic employees and current leadership, warning that the technology could kill all of humanity if someone does not pull the handbrakes on development.

Google engineers can now use Claude

According to the people who confirmed the story, Anthropic’s strongest coding model can now be used by Google engineers. However, it will be limited to the in-house version of Google’s development platform, Antigravity, with per-user quotas applied.

Reports suggest that Google lifted the restrictions on deploying the model from the rival lab because the speed of engineering work became a priority over any rivalry.

“Gemini remains our primary and foundational model for internal development, with third-party models available on a quota to support specialized use cases,” the spokesperson quoted by Business Insider said, who also reiterated that Claude is a supplement rather than an admission that Anthropic’s models performed better.

However, Business Insider reported that engineers at the company had grown frustrated with Gemini’s limits, including the Flash 3.8 model, which is still behind Anthropic Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex on coding tasks.

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) made a similar call earlier this year when it allowed staff to use Claude and Codex after complaints.

Google whistleblower sounds AI doom alarm

In addition to using Anthropic’s Claude, Google has appeared in similar headlines as the Amodei-led AI lab. Bilal Chughtai, who left his AGI safety and alignment research role at Google DeepMind in July, warned that after watching AI development up close, he was alarmed by where it was heading:

“I earnestly believe that AI has the potential to kill us all, and that we might be running out of time to avoid this outcome.”

The resignation post is the first of its kind from a Google lab alum. Chughtai is proposing coordination “to avoid this manic race between AI companies” and development paced to “a speed that society can handle,” language that echoes what Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei laid out in an essay on Saturday, September 12, titled “We Must Pace the Frontier.”

That essay drew public support from OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Elon Musk, and it followed the viral resignation of Jacob Coxon, who quit Anthropic on September 9 and told the BBC there was “a strong chance that we could all die in the immediate future.”

Anthropic scientist Evan Hubinger has put the odds of AI killing everyone above 10% this decade, a figure Geoffrey Hinton called “not unreasonable.”

President Donald Trump has waved the warnings away, telling reporters his worry is beating China.
