India Prices $10 Billion of Equity Deals in August, a Record Month

India’s equity capital market has priced almost $10 billion of deals in August, putting it on course for its strongest month on record.

A $3.2 billion government sale of shares in Life Insurance Corp. of India led the tally. Manipal Health Enterprises added $958 million through its initial public offering (IPO), alongside block trades and institutional placements.

Equity Deal Rush Runs Ahead of a Falling Nifty 50

The rush sits against India’s $5.1 trillion secondary market, one of Asia’s weakest performers this year. The benchmark NSE Nifty 50 Index has fallen 2.21% so far in August, while the BSE SENSEX has slipped 1.51%.

The declines extend a difficult year. The Nifty 50 is down 7.36% in 2026, and the SENSEX has shed 9.08%. Both benchmarks hit their August lows on August 19 before recovering part of the drop over the following sessions.

Meanwhile, the surge in dealmaking has been fueled by the expanding role of India’s domestic mutual funds and insurers, as well as strong participation from retail investors. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have also returned after a long stretch of selling.

FPIs bought a net 23,544 crore rupees ($2.5 billion) of Indian equities so far in August, following 20,200 crore rupees ($2.1 billion) in July, according to depository data. They remain net sellers of roughly 2.3 trillion rupees for 2026.

Larger offerings from the National Stock Exchange of India and Jio Platforms are expected later this year. Whether buyers stay at the table will determine how those deals are priced.
