Hyperion DeFi’s $31M profit highlights HYPE as crypto market slumps

Source Cryptopolitan

On August 12, Hyperion DeFi, the first U.S.-listed company to build on Hyperliquid, announced its record net income of $31 million in the second quarter. This amount is more than tripled since the company made a profit of $8.8 million during the first quarter.

Hyperion attributed the jump in its net income to the rising valuation of its HYPE holdings, which became $133 million and provided investors with an understanding of how crypto treasury strategy works in times of rather lackluster market sentiments.

A second straight record quarter

Hyperion’s $31 million profit was its second consecutive quarterly record, compared with a loss of nearly $9 million a year earlier. The company also reported adjusted EBITDA of $53.7 million. Its shares rose about 5% in after-hours trading following the results.

The biggest driver was its HYPE treasury. Hyperion held about 2 million HYPE worth $133 million at the end of June, up from $71 million three months earlier.

It also provides investors with a good indicator of HYPE exposure for the stock. With 15.16 million shares outstanding as of May 13, the company is showing 2 million HYPE, leading to 0.13 HYPE per share or the HYPE value of approximately $8.78 at the estimated $133 million valuation. This is not a net asset value calculation but a solid way of examining how HYPE prices can affect Hyperion’s share backing.

Bucking a sector-wide slump

The performance of Hyperion is distinct because the overall crypto market suffered in the second quarter. As CoinGecko indicated, the overall crypto market cap decreased by 12.6% to $2.1 trillion while the daily average of trading volume decreased by 20.9%.

Yet derivatives activity proved more resilient. The top 10 centralized perpetual exchanges handled $12.7 trillion in the quarter, down 10%, while Hyperliquid continued to gain ground in on-chain derivatives. Perpetual decentralized exchanges averaged $611.57 billion in monthly volume during the first four months of 2026, with Hyperliquid handling $190.28 billion in April alone.

Hyperliquid is also becoming a bigger bridge between crypto and traditional finance. CoinGecko found that it processed $272.39 billion in TradFi perpetual volume from January 2025 through May 2026.

“We have redefined what it means to be a digital asset treasury,” Hyperion CEO Hyunsu Jung said, pointing to the company’s larger HYPE position, new Hyperliquid businesses and lower costs.

Renting out the treasury through HAUS

Hyperion is also trying to make its HYPE holdings work harder rather than simply sitting on its balance sheet.

The company allocated a total of 500,000 HYPE to Entropy for HIP-3 markets and an additional 500,000 HYPE to Skew Technologies for HIP-4 outcome markets. Under the Hyperliquid HIP-3 system, market deployers need 500,000 HYPE in their wallets and staked. Hyperion would supply the necessary funding and receive equity and royalties in return.

After the cessation of USDH, Hyperion ended its previous HAUS (Hype Asset Use Service) arrangements with Native Markets as well as Felix. This resulted in 800,000 HYPE being freed up for redeployment. The company said that it had routed 1 million HYPE toward HIP-3 and HIP-4 projects since June.

Why the token drives the results

The relationship between HYPE and Hyperliquid is critical to the investment thesis. In March, Coinbase Institutional stated that 97% of the fees generated by the protocol are being used to buy back HYPE. Then, in a filing with the SEC on May 19th, an update indicated that 99% of the fees generated by the protocol are now sent to the Assistance Fund, which uses the funds to purchase and burn HYPE.

This establishes a strong yet dual-sided relationship. Intensive trading activities can generate fees, the fees can be utilized for HYPE purchases, and increased HYPE price can increase Hyperion’s treasury. The same mechanism operates in reverse when the token price declines.

As of August 13, HYPE was priced at about $56.50 with 0.64% price increase during the last week, CoinMarketCap informs.

Hyperion’s record quarter highlights both the potential benefit and the kind of risk associated with the HYPE treasury model: the company has a chance to seize enormous profits when Hyperliquid grows and HYPE rises, but its performance depends heavily on the future of the token and the market that backs it.
