On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Nov. 4, 2026, LegalZoom (NASDAQ:LZ) announced a strategic shift toward recurring subscriptions to counter search traffic headwinds. Expanding high-value legal support services stabilizes revenue while traditional business formation transactions decline. Three things management said on the call stand out.

1. Premium Subscriptions Are Replacing Single-Transaction Formation Revenue

LegalZoom's pivoting away from one-off business filings toward recurring expert support. Subscriptions that combine software with human advisors build deeper long-term relationships and increase average revenue per user.

Business manager subscriptions grew approximately 25% sequentially in Q3. We believe that growth underscores customers' demand for ongoing support beyond a single transaction, and reinforces our decision to make lasting service and expertise a core part of the customer journey from day one.
-- Jeffrey Stibel, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

2. Search Traffic Headwinds Force Channel Diversification Into Partnerships and AI

Changes to search engine algorithms reduced customer acquisition, prompting management to fund alternative sales channels. It's accepting lower near-term marketing efficiency to scale bank partnerships, affiliate programs, and paid search inside artificial intelligence (AI) engines.

And so from our perspective, it is more important than ever that we diversify from a channel standpoint and reduce our reliance on traditional search.
-- Noel Watson, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer

3. Artificial Intelligence Automation Expands Gross Margins and Improves Operating Leverage

Internal automation lowers customer support costs while accelerating service speed. Replacing routine human interactions with software agents reduces operating expenses across care centers and legal operations, and boosts profit margins.

Gross margin was 73%, up 2 percentage points year over year. In customer care, our AI agent now fully resolves almost half of chat conversations, up from roughly one-third earlier this year.
-- Noel Watson, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer

Looking Ahead

Traditional search traffic continues to face pressure, yet search headwinds aren't stopping management from expanding recurring revenue channels. LegalZoom relies on its debt-free balance sheet, strong cash generation, and brand equity to fund customer acquisition while maintaining strict return hurdles across new marketing and sales channels.

For example, earlier customers from ChatGPT are generating higher lifetime value compared with our traditional paid channels. Volumes are small, but we expect ad opportunities in these AI experiences to grow materially over time.
-- Jeffrey Stibel, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

Transitioning from transactional filings to ongoing advisory relationships creates a higher quality, more predictable earnings base. Expanding expert offerings ensures customers stay engaged long after their initial business setup.

Our human-in-the-loop subscription services now generate 49% of revenue and grew 17% year over year in Q3. Our direction is to help owners start, run, and grow through our platforms, our experts, and our partner services.
-- Jeffrey Stibel, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
