On its third quarter of 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 29, 2026, AGCO (NYSE:AGCO) noted that global farm equipment demand has dropped to its lowest point in over a decade. High diesel and fertilizer prices squeeze farm profitability, but aging tractor fleets and internal cost cuts position the business for solid operating leverage when farm spending recovers. Three things management said stand out.

1. Factory Production Cuts Protect Dealer Networks and Channel Balance

Global machinery demand has hit a decade low as elevated input costs squeeze farm cash flow. Management is cutting factory hours to lower dealer inventory units rather than dumping excess machinery into a weak market.

Our third-quarter results reflect the fact that we are focused on what we can control, aligning production with retail demand, actively managing dealer inventories, and taking structural costs out of the business.
-- Eric Hansotia, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

2. Structural Cost Efficiency Projects Soften the Trough Margin Impact

Management targets tens of millions of dollars in net savings in 2026 through operational streamline programs. These structural adjustments allow the company to maintain roughly 7% operating margins in deep industry troughs, compared to 4% margins in prior downcycles.

Our cost and productivity initiatives remain on track to deliver between $60 million and $70 million of benefits in 2026, reflecting the progress we are making to improve AGCO's structural cost position and helping offset a more challenging demand environment.
-- Indira Agarwal, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

3. Direct On-Farm Support Drives North American Market Share Growth

The company is expanding its FarmerCore distribution model, which delivers service, parts, and support directly to farms. Expanding mobile dealer services helped drive higher large agricultural equipment sales in North America despite lower overall industry volume.

In large AG especially, we're still up over 200 basis points for the large AG business across both brands. That's been a continual trend over the last few years.
-- Eric Hansotia, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Tractor fleets have reached their oldest average age in decades, setting up a natural replacement cycle once farm economics recover. In the meantime, management is tracking dealer inventory levels and pricing discipline while preparing for a potential 2027 market uptick.

We continue to believe the industry is at the trough of the cycle, with some recovery coming in 2027. ... Growing replacement needs should provide additional tailwind as market conditions improve.
-- Eric Hansotia, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer

Over the longer term, the business leans on premium brands, direct-to-farm service, and retrofit technology to drive value creation.

Our differentiated strategy positions AGCO to create value through the cycle and capture growth as market conditions improve.
-- Eric Hansotia, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer
